We made the drive to Glendale on a Friday morning to try the much ballyhooed soup dumplings, but were disappointed to find out that they are only available on Sat. and Sunday's. We tried the shrimp & pork won ton soup, shrimp & pork shao mai, and pork fried noodles. All the dishes were good, but nothing to write home about. We prefer having dim sum in one of the many Chinese restaurants in Monterey Park or San Gabriel, especially after we paid the check, $31 plus tip.

I had heard about the "amazing" Din Tai Fung from a friend who has been (regularly) to the original restaurant in Arcadia(?). I thought this glendale location was very marginal. The food was good/fine, just nothing to rave about.

A member of our lunch party ordered iced tea, and the waitress asked, “Green or Black.” That’s not the response you would have heard from a waitress in Georgia; it would have been “sweet or unsweet.”

The food was good as well as the service.

This newly opened restaurant is located in the Americana shopping center.

We arrived at 11:00 am and our party of 5 was seated immediately. We arrived early because we heard that they do not take reservations and that long lines are very typical.

When you enter the restaurant you immediately see a room full of chefs preparing the fresh dumplings. The restaurant is nicely decorated without the normal chaotic feel of other dim sum restaurants. The bathroom was actually clean!

Their dumplings are excellent. Juicy and freshly prepared and cooked. We ordered around 15 dishes. Our server brought around 2-3 dishes at a time. This way, each dish was fresh and hot. A very nice touch. Most dishes cost around $10. However, our favorite dish (truffle dumplings) was $22. So, do plan on spending more here than at a typical dim sum lunch.

Wish this were located closer to us!

Good food, pretty fast service, but you should know what you are doing before you go in. And of course you will probs have to wait.
