We were introduced to this lovely winery last year by Gene of Healdsburg Area WInery Tours. It's a place that sources grapes to well-known wineries like Chateau St. Jean. They also keep a very small amount of the best-quality grapes for themselves and make great wine out of it. Some people really love their chards but our favorites are the reds, especially their premium cab blend, Scion.

This winery is a little off the beaten path as some others have noted, but it's only about a mile from the Jimtown Store in Alexander Valley so easy to visit. The tasting room is small so it can get crowded, but the staff is great and will make it worth the wait.

We liked the wines so much last year that we joined the wine club. They have great-sounding parties which unfortunately we haven't been able to get to as we don't live in the area. However we were recently able to take advantage of a new benefit which is free tours/tastings for wine club members. We were lucky enough to have Tina for a 2-hour private tour and tasting in the cave and the family home. We had so much fun tasting wines, taking about wine, and learning about the winery. Tina had crackers, cheese and chocolate to accompany our experience which included a vertical tasting of various Scion vintages and a taste of some of their very limited-release reds. It was the highlight of our trip to the Napa and Sonoma Valley areas.

The Robert Young Winery is a bit off the beaten path for those tasting in the Alexander Valley region of Sonoma County. But if you love great Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot served in an intimate, friendly tasting room where you won't be elbow to elbow with dozens of other guests -- it's worth a small extra drive, not really that far but also not along the route to and from many of the other wineries. You'll be treated to a friendly tasting room staff who knows and loves their wine. Cheers!

Robert Young is a good example of a winery doing it right. The folks here are very friendly, and more than happy to tell you about the (very interesting) history of the place, the family history, and how they make the wines, etc. Nothing pretentious here, just a good, genuine vibe, all about having fun.

Pours are generous, and tasting fees are refundable with a bottle purchase. (Take note, all you poseur wineries who say nobody does that!!)

We especially liked the Chardonnays, and enjoyed the entertaining wine presentation. Prices are in line with similar wineries in the Russian River area... the quality shows and it's worth it.

We were directed to Robert Young by another tasting room employee. Unfortunately, when we opened the door to the tasting room, it was packed full of people. I guess that is a good sign. We were going to try and come back later but just went on tasting at other parts of the county.
We will try it on the next trip to the area.

Robert Young winery was one of our stops during Winter Wineland 2013 in January 2013. Compared to the other wineries visited this one was unremarkable with just two wines to taste--one a 2010 Chardonnay and the other a 2008 Merlot. When tasting the Merlot, we were told that 2008 was a very hot summer so the Merlot grapes a tough skin and too much tannin so it did not have the usual velvet finish of a Merlot.. So why were they serving it--just to get rid of it. The asking price for this wine was $52 which also made no sense.
With so many other wineries with better wines and a more scenic location, I would give this one a miss.
