“Clean & good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

I had the good luck to stumble upon this hotel during a recent motorcycle trip through Northern California. Like most Best Westerns, this hotel was clean & comfortable and the room quite spacious. Staff quite friendly and competent. Complimentary breakfast let me hit the road with a full tank early the next morning. I'd stay there again.

One of the three best hotels along 101, north of San Francisco. Helpful staff, good breakfast and appropriate decor. Staff cares about service. Garberville is in the middle of pot country and, unfortunately, has some harmless bums living on the streets. The hotel takes measures to keep them away from the hotel. This problem is prevalent almost anywhere in Mendocino and Humboldt county.

There are not many places to stay in Garberville. This looked good on their website. We found it crowded and noisy throughout the whole night. Also, many of the young people hanging out near the hotel looked like drifters and drug users. For an elderly couple this was not comforting and the bathroom was dirty with hairs in it.
They do have a good breakfast and the wine reception was nice and the room was updated and comfortable.

Stayed here on a visit to see the Redwood Forest and explore the Avenue of Giants. It's probably as good as you're going to do in Garberville. Not that it wasn't "good", but the entire town has a weird vibe, and so does this place.

We were forced to rent a big giant suite with three queen beds and a separate bedroom because, when standing at the counter and the lady said "we only have 1 regular room left" , the guy next to me being helped by a different employee but, who overheard ours, said "I'll take that one" to the person helping him. I turned toward the man, who didn't return eye contact, and made one of those split second decisions that prove I'm not entirely lacking good judgment.

Having already been kicked out of a Paul McCartney concert this year, I didn't want to add "fist fight in Garberville Best Western lobby" to my list of accomplishments, so I simply turned back to she who was helping me and said "that's fine, we'll take the suite".

The room itself was pretty nice and would be great if traveling with a large family or group. The private bedroom has its own TV. The main part is about the same as a regular morel/hotel room and had two queens. Bathroom was adequate. My wife did accidentally leave a really nice Pachima in the room and when we called they said they would check to see if it was turned in by the maids, but we never received a call back. We were not holding out hope anyway.

The back windows of our room faced the highway and we could hear nearby drunken arguing for most of the night. Not sure if it was from the parking lot or across the highway. The night before, as we walked to three different restaurants trying to find one that was actually ready and prepared to provide service, we encountered a vast number of ne'er-do-wells loitering and shuffling about. The town seems to be a drifter magnet, with many longhaired backpackers laying about. I'm not judging them, I'm just saying that this is what we saw. I was told later by a waitress at a town further south that a lot of "pot workers" drift around the area looking for work trimming plants. That doesn't seem hard to believe.

The breakfast in the morning was comparable to what you find in the quick self-serve hotels such as Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn. Adequate and met expectations, but nothing the write home about. It was actually full of people as I think the motel filled up, and the breakfast stuff and serving area was well stocked and clean.

Finally, the Redwoods were fantastic and this hotel provides probably the closest, nicest spot to venture out from if that's why you find yourself up in them neck of the woods. It's a 30+ mile drive meandering through gorgeous magnificent Coastal Redwoods with many, many places to stop for hiking, standing, photos, etc. Well worth the trip, and the sole reason we went.

If we're ever up there again we'll stay again at this Best Western but I'll call ahead and make a reservation instead of just showing up.

We had spent a previous night at another local motel and it was not worth the room rate. Humboldt Inn was a great stay. We were very happy with our service. The rooms are nice and the hot-tub was clean. There is a great restaurant a block and a half away called Calico's.

Enjoyed our first visit here only. Last visit in September was on a weekend and the place was filled with rowdy beer drinking teens. You also pay a hefty premium for the wine and cheese happy hour. Checking out in the morning I found a beer bottle on top of one of my car tires, luckily before we drove off. It's a strange little hippy type town, but there is one nice restaurant within walking distance. Anyways, after three stays there, this was our last.

My overall rating is not the average of my specific ratings below because there is no box to rate ambiance.

Front desk staff and housekeeping staff were all very nice. We stayed 2 nights in a King room with a pool and mountain view and were quite pleased with the décor space and amenities. Actually a nicer room than the one be paid double for in Mendocino (OK we paid for the ocean view in Mendocino). This is probably the nicest place to stay in Garberville and, perhaps our experience was more reflective of being in Humboldt County than a reflection on this property...... BUT we are middle-aged non-marijuana users so we were rather creeped out by the other guests, the open drug deals and smell of weed smoking going on in the parking lot, noise from the adjacent rooms in the middle of the night, young adults going behind the building into the bushes for who-knows-what. The sheriff's and fire department are adjacent and a sheriff's car in full view. So, I guess that tells you something about this community. (we came for the redwoods). At breakfast, some showed up in dirty bare feet, ratted hair, hoodies up and holes in their pants (breakfast room is street-side). They might have been street people who sneaked in for breakfast (you have to use your room key to get into the breakfast room but the door doesn't always shut tight). However the nice ladies in the breakfast room did their best to ensure people had a room key to keep out the street people. When we commented to the front desk lady about the drug trade in the parking lot, she said "Oh really?"....like she didn't know. Breakfast was just OK. Breads, waffles, cereals nice, but if you want low carbs your choice is a sort of mass-produced omellete and sausage. No variation in the offering. Biscuits with sausage gravy seemed like a strange offering for this part of the country.

Room Tip: If you want to stay here, then choose a second floor room facing the pool and mountains. Rooms on t...
