Best Western Plus Humboldt House Inn
Ranked #2 of 5 Hotels in Garberville
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Staff were friendly on checkin, the room rate was good and the room average. The lighting in the room was poor and we had to turn every light on just so we could read. The bed was comfortable though. as people were smoking on the landing we could not have a window open. The hotel was ok for a one night stop.

We have stayed at this property four times over the past decade, and it has never failed to impress us. We visit the Avenue of the Giants for four or five days each time we come to the North Coast, and returning to the Humboldt House each evening is like coming home. The room is comfortable, clean, and spacious, the staff is helpful and friendly, and we always have a good night's sleep before arising to wander the redwood groves again.

One of the more attractive features is the complimentary wine and cheese reception every evening, and we look forward to mingling with fellow guests over a glass of Redwood Creek. We have made many friends there over the years, and still keep in touch with some. Especially welcome this trip is the expanded hot breakfast, available until 10 each morning--omelets, biscuits and gravy, sausage, waffles, and the usual assortment of beverages, cereals, toast and muffins, yogurt, boiled eggs, etc.--which gets us off to a great start.

Jim, the owner, keeps his hand in the weekly operation of the property, and it shows. There have been some nice upgrades over the years. We especially enjoy sitting on our balcony overlooking the pool and the hills across the way, sipping a glass of wine.

While we were there during the middle of September, the hotel was booked full every night. We recommend making advance reservations, as it is the nicest property in town. Taking advantage of our military discount (retired Navy), we got a great room rate.

Garberville/Redway has a woeful dearth of reasonably priced restaurants for dinner, but that isn't the fault of the Humboldt House Inn. It's best to inquire at the desk to get some dining tips.

We would never hesitate to recommend this hotel for both short and longer stays. We'll be back, of course.

We were delayed on the road, so we called for a late arrival. It was no problem. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant. It seems we are always having the bad luck of getting a second floor room when the elevator is broken or non-existent, HOWEVER - this hotel is on somewhat of a split level, so you go in the front door, open the sliding glass back door and voila! We unloaded our car so easily!!!! The room was beautiful and the bed was oh so comfortable! The breakfast is a better quality than usual, and they have wind and cheese for their guests in the evening a(we were sorry our late arrival caused us to miss that). This was a very pleasant overnight stay.

Room Tip: Get there in time for the 5:30 pm wine and cheese event in the Garden Room.

Good location just off the highway and close to main street. Room comfortable, clean and quite large. Not too noisy either. Check in was very busy with only one effective staff member on duty- disappointing as they knew they were fully booked. Not much choice in town for dining which became a problem with so many visitors. Breakfast included but not inspiring. Happy hour with wine and snacks was a nice welcoming touch. Would recommend for short stay. Reasonable price for this location.

We are so glad we stayed here after seeing what else is available in town. There is a wonderful evening wine reception with seating inside or in atrium type setting. We sat in the atrium area and struck up conversations with other fellow travelers. The hostess kept our wine glasses full without us having to leave the table. The room was spacious and nice and there was a balcony with table and chairs overlooking the pool. On a warm night there is nothing better. Breakfast was good, too, with waffles, eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, cereal, and yogurt. No complaints here!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the pool. There is one floor where you can walk directly through a ga...

Pros: The room was spacious and comfortably furnished. There is an extra sink outside of the bathroom which was convenient. We had a lovely balcony overlooking the pool; it was fairly quiet at night.

Cons: We arrived at 4:30 p.m. and our room wasn't ready; didn't get off to a great start. The lighting in the room was horrible; you literally couldn't see in the bathroom, and the florescent bulb was flickering. The wifi access was truly awful. We travel with both a pc and an ipad, and the ipad kept insisting that we re-login. The access was so slow on the PC that we literally were being timed out of applications; could NOT blog at all; very disappointing. They have a laundry room for the use of guests, but it appears that the floor in the laundry room has NEVER been washed; it was disgusting.

This is a nice hotel in the area, the rooms are well decorated. We had an end room on the 2nd floor, perfect location as it was quite.
The bed was comfortable but the comforter was very heavy and warm.
The breakfast has a great selection and the afternoon wine and cheese is a nice benefit.
The only complaint I have is the 'smokers"... when you walk out of your room - it seems like the whole town smells like the medical cigarette.
