“Wonderful experience at the Benbow Inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2011

My wife and i just returned from lodging at the Benbow Inn. It was absolutely spectacular, the foyer was decorated for the holiday period and made for a warm and cozy feel. The bar was great and so were the happy hour specials. The Restaurant and food and service was excellent. The room was extremely clean and very spacious. Overall a wonderful stay a must for all you travelers!!

Maybe this place is ok in the summer, when you can be out in the gardens, but avoid it in the winter. We were in a "lower terrace" room that we were told had wireless internet. But the internet did not work. The room was advertised as having a queen bed and a pull-out single bed; the person who slept in the single bed said that she could feel (and count) every single spring in the mattress. The hotel said that VCRs were available to use in the terrace rooms, so we perused the list of "classics" and chose one. It turned out to be a home-made pirated version of a movie shown on TV: bad lighting, bad sound, bad resolution, but we persevered and then, about half-way through, the movie ended suddenly and turned into a video of George "W" Bush giving a stump speech. Not our idea of a way to end the day. The water was nice and hot after waiting 5 minutes for it to warm up. One person in the group thinks it should be called the Deadbow Hotel.

Room Tip: "Lower Terrrace" room might be nice in the summer. Like a dungeon in the winter.

John and Teresa Porter have created an amazing spot for relaxation, with many luxuries associated with old-style hospitality; for example, the night clerk let us sit in the piano bar, already closed for the night, and enjoy some snacks we'd brought and our own champagne. The restaurant serves terrific food, the walks through the woods near the Eel River are gorgeous, and the lobby with its large fireplace, reading nooks and seasonal decor is spacious and a wonderful hangout spot. They have special packages for xmas and New Year's and I hope someday to have a family holiday there for two or three days. I didn't want a tv so didn't miss it. They have events throughout the year--I was there for the annual wine tasting benefit for local libraries. This was a treat, with some of the best accompanying food I've ever had and culminating in an auction. Proprietor John Porter was assisting the wait-staff at breakfast the next morning, I think not just because it was a full house, but also because he is a born host who loves his business. 5 stars!

The Benbow is an 85 year old resort set in the Redwood Forest. It perfectly appointed and cozy with even the smallest of details taken care of. There is no TV or cell signal (a TV is in the bar and cell signal on the far reach of the balcony). However, there is an assortment of puzzles, games and quiet along with spectacular views.

There is one restaurant in the resort that is very good, we especially enjoyed breakfast and the French toast. The hotel also hosts an hour with Scones and Tea. Both were exceptional, but perhaps it was all the fresh air and relaxation.

I would recommend to anyone wanting to decompress from life.

Room Tip: Choose the room that face the bridge, not the highway.

Our overnight stay November 2nd was a total treat. We chose the 85th Anniversary special a twin bed room with dinner & breakfast included. We were welcomed with warmth, smiles and friendliness. This is a quaint historic hotel so if what you want is a modern new hotel this maybe isn't for you. We loved it! We are seniors but managed luggage and stairs without a problem. Our room had two twin beds and two wingback chairs which were very comfortable. We sat in them with a nice glass of wine and enjoyed the autumn leaves and the setting sun. The room was small but adequate and very clean. For dinner I had porcini encrusted halibut and my husband had lamb. Dessert for me was chocolate mousse and my husband had chocolate banana cheesecake, decadent but yummy! In the morning we had eggs benedict and the country breakfast/ham. Not our normal cereal & yogurt but what a treat. We had our own special bottle of wine with dinner and there is usually a $15 corkage fee but our waitress waived it. She had been really busy and felt she hadn't given us quick enough service. We were in no hurry and didn't mind but it was a nice touch. We felt she was very friendly and informative and helped us a lot in ordering our meal. We can't wait to return even without the great Anniversary special.

A tudor-style giant on the Eel river, we've stayed on business and pleasure trips. It's great to sip a cocktail next to the warmth of the fire in the cozy piano bar (in the summer the adjacent patio is wonderful), or lounge in front of the grand fireplace in the grand lobby. The dining room is splendid, and it's in a gorgeous, rustic location, yet so close to highway 101.

It's said Clark Gable and Carole Lombard used to land their bi-plane on the (now-defunct) golf course on the front lawn. The Benbow probably looks now as it did then, and if you like those romantic old days and charming Victorian inns that are showing their age a bit--like a beloved old great-aunt--this is the place to be. The hotel feels authentic, the wait staff very attentive, and the rooms comfortable and clean though definitely not modernized (which we found part of the hotel's appeal). The bathroom was very small, the hot water didn't run until morning, and the space heater provided had long since broken, but we had sherry in our room, an outstanding dinner in the restaurant, and morning coffee on the terrace. Very memorable.
