I live in Modesto and this is probably my favorite refuge to see the birds in the Central Valley. Operated by the Nature Conservancy, this well maintained refuge features a woodland trail into a beautiful oak forest, ponds, marshes and a very small visitor center. Located a short drive off Highway 5 near the town of Galt and south of Sacramento, (take the Twin Cities Exit), people enjoy walking around the refuge boardwalks, paved and dirt paths. The refuge features sandhill cranes and geese in the winter and a number of ducks, shorebirds and other waterfowl from fall through spring. I have also seen river otter, turtles and beaver here at the refuge. People really enjoy this place, young and old. A refreshing place to take a stroll or longer walk and admire the pretty scenery! In addition, people bring their kayaks and canoes to boat on the Cosumnes River which flows through the refuge. There are some planned events such as guided walks and bird counts. Check their website. If you love nature and especially birdwatching, be sure you visit this place!
