“a unique and interesting place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2011

See a huge underground house and citrus grove carved out of stone by one man just using a pickaxe. It's surprisingly sunny due to all the skylights, but has a nice cool temperature. We walked up and got right in, but you might want to call ahead to check tour times. We were surprised how much we liked the place. It's a one hour tour.

“Better than what we expected!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2011

Very interesting find for Fresno! A must see if you are in or around Fresno. Well worth the time! It was an amazing place mainly of what one man's vision created. He was ahead of his time in his under ground creations including using solar energy for living underground. We enjoyed the tour and the history of this amazing man.

“Beat the Heat by visiting the Underground Gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2010

In the Fresno heat of summer the best place to escape to besides the Water Park is the Underground Gardens. Funny, I never toured the gardens until I moved away from Fresno, but now it's one of my favorite recommendations for visitors. Such a unique experience and an interesting, historical, story. You enter the gardens by descending down stairs that bring you into the waiting room where the docents will share the history of the gardens with you. This was a man's home that he dug by himself. Maybe he was part mole. You will be surprised at how roomy the rooms are and at the creativity and brillance behind the designs of this Italian immigrant. Simple living at its best. We wanted to move right in. Enjoy the remains of the Aquarium, an engineering feat, bedrooms, the open air bathtub in the garden using rainwater, the underground fruit trees and much more. Oh yes, and I do remember they were once featured on a Bob Villa special. I believe is was HGTV.

“More Impressive than we expected!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2010

We stopped to visit Forestiere Underground Gardens on 7/25/10 and did the first tour at 10:00. Our tour guide was great. What you will notice first is how unimpressive the grounds are when you park on Shaw Ave. But then......you walk under a beautiful trellis draped with grapevines and decend into the first of 3 levels of this amazing underground labyrinth, the life work of Baldassare Forestiere, an Italian immigrant who used only hand tools to dig his underground oasis. We own a construction business as does the couple that we traveled with and we were so blown away by his ingenuity and design. Our teenage/young adult kids were even impressed!
THIS IS A MUST SEE IF YOU ARE PASSING THROUGH FRESNO. We stopped on our way from SoCal to Bass Lake.

“Limited Hours and Capacity!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2010

I am sure this is a terrific experience, BUT - there are only 3-5 tours/day, l;imited to 15 people. They do not sell tickets in advance. So, you have to figure out when is a good time when attendance is low enough to get you in. Really - too much to deal with. I skipped it.
