Owner description: The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a traditional northwestern American Japanese Garden. The Garden was constructed to honor Fresno’s Sister City, Kochi, Japan, celebrating the spirit of understanding and promoting educational and cultural awareness. The beauty, grace and serenity of Japanese design is present in the use of varied plant material, rocks and stones, and water throughout the five acre garden. The garden is designed around the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter; granite markers identify each section. In the Fall of 2015 we were proud to be chosen to house and display the world-class Clark Bonsai Collection, which is now on permanent display in the garden, offering a seasonal rotation of some of the finest Bonsai in the United States.

Tucked in the corner of Woodward Park is this gem. Springtime is spectacular when the trees are blooming. There is a family of Peacocks that live here and they are really a kick.

We went in July, so maybe it's just that there was nothing in bloom, & nothing really unusual in the landscaping. It was peaceful & there were a lot of ducks (too many really). We also saw a couple of peacocks. It looked like Woodward Park would be a nice place to spend the day with your family, but I would definitely not make a special trip just to see the garden. There is a $5.00 parking fee to get into the park itself (free if you're a senior) and a charge to get into the park. It's not a lot, but still I wouldn't pay just to go to the garden.

Beautiful, we got to see tons of baby geese. All the kids there were excited about getting to see the big fish, geese, peacocks, and one turtle. Not a huge garden, but a fun way to spend a couple hours. Next time we will definitely bring a frisbee.

In another one of our fun trips to Fresno, we found the Shizen Garden on accident (like everything.) We packed lunches and enjoyed the day with our son at the Woodward Park and it ended up taking more of the day than we expected. It had been a long time since we'd been to the park and mom was really on a mission to get us to walk around the whole park.

While coming around a bend, we noticed the sign for this place and a lot of people parked in the lot. We paid our way in and ended up staying in the Gardens for a long, long, long time!

This is a perfect place to really spend some time with a child to notice little details and to completely capture their attention. My son really became intrigued by the entire energy in the place, and we plan to come back again when the weather warms up a bit more. I'm betting that it is going to be beautiful

I recommend this place to anyone visiting Fresno, and even to people who live in Fresno if you haven't been yet.
