A colleague recimmended this restaurant (which has 2 locations in San Francisco and another one in Dublin CA) so we decided to give it a try. It is located in a strip mall close to downtonw Fremont. I was not prepared to find out it is not your standard restauran: you seat yourself, then go up to the counter to place your order. It is a large room with many tables with chairs so you just grab an empty one. There is no meun board but there is a stack of huge paper menus on the counter. After figuring that out, we picked a few dishes from the extensive menu, including a curried goat Karahi, Nihari (beef shank), naan. They bring food to your table promptly.

The food is delicious, and the curry is very hot. There is no provision for different degrees of hotness. The beef is very tender, practically melts in your mouth but is very spicy. The goat meat (my first time consuming goat) was cut in cubes and was cooked in a spicy curry. The texture is rougher than pork, but is very tender and tasty. The naan was piping hot, very big, and hand made, one of 4 varieties on the menu. They do catering as well.

Price is very reasonable ($1 for each huge naan). The food is very tasty as long as you can handle spicy food. We would come back.

We went to this restaurant on the advice of friends. Ordered the lamb chops and what we got were chops that were fatty and had very large bones so the actual meat was very meager. Maybe this was an anomaly but we won't be going back.

Over the past several years, Shalimar restaurant has become one of the top notch restaurants in Fremont serving delicious Indian Pakistani food. This place is packed whether on a weekday or a weekend which speaks for itself. If you don't mind the loud noise, the smell of exotic spices and self service environment then you must eat here.
Pros - Delicious finger licking spicy food. The chicken Kabab's are really good. Centrally located in the heart of Fremont.
Cons - This is basically a self service restaurant so don't expect to be waited on. Since it is generally very busy, wait times can be 15-30 mins. during rush hours. Ambience is about a 3 on a scale of 1-10. Tables are packed together. Definitely a very loud place. Curries can be pretty oily.

Tremendously complex flavors and AROMAS! This is not "Indian" food, but LEBANESE! We took it to go, which was perfect. The restaurant is loud and you order at the counter, so not much in the way of service or atmosphere. But, oh, the food....

It was highly recommended so I decided to give it a shot. Service is almost non existent just like back in the developing world mentality :-). I tried their biryani, was ok, nothing special, garlic naan was a complete flop, but overall not too bad.
