Cooking Papa is a very good Hong Kong style restaurant- with some dishes adapted from the West. Example of the latter is Baked Portuguese rice with curry - if on a winter night a traveler gets cold - this is the dish to warm him up. Their BBQ stuff is very good, also Hainan chicken - which gets overcooked almost everywhere else, but not here. Some special dishes need to be ordered ahead, so if someone is really just visiting, it may not be realistic, but by far, most of the menu is available. Also, please do not be scared by a longer line - the place is highly efficient, so even when there are people waiting outside, the overall wait is not very long. The only thing it is not for is a very romantic date - the place is a bit utilitarian.

So, spending the weekend in Bay Area with family and felt like having Chinese food. Knew about this place in foster city from the past. All agreed and we drove there. WOW, changes. The place is completely remodeled and changed. They now have an open kitchen concept, where you can see the kitchen and all the work from behind a glass.
Except, they forgot to build enough space for the dirty dishes. A row of 6 carts lined up in the entry, right underneath the kitchen counter piled up with dirty dishes and left over food. What a dirty look. Good menu, easy to understand and reasonable prices. Ordered our food and were served pretty quick. As soon as the first bite, our server asked us if we need to order any more items. I guess that is typical in hospitality businesses. We responded, No thank you we are fine for now.a the next thing we know was the invoice presented to us. The server stood by the table and asked us to pay eve though we have not even consumed half of our food. We paid, but what if there was an issue with the food or service? Which it was. No more service after that. We could not even get a refill on the water for our son, and the tea we got served was cold.
So no more of this place, it was an experience and adventure.

We have been eating here many times. The food can be great to average and it really depends on the dish you order. Some of the best dishes are congee, steam rice in the lotus leave and rice roll. Some of the dishes I would not recommend are Fook-Kin fried rice at it was too watery, and their private kitchen dishes were only average taste and definitely not worth the price. We ordered the glutinous rice stuffed in the chicken where all the chicken meat was missing in the dish, and all you had was just the skin and the sticky rice; the pipa tofu was just okay and nothing special. I also would not recommend the seafood dish as we ordered the Cooking Papa style lobster. While the taste was pretty good, we barely were able to find any lobster meat, and all there was just bones despite the lobster was almost 3 pounds weight. Overall, this place is good for casual dishes.
