“Creative menu at a very traditional Chinese restaurant”
Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

Very creative menu for a very traditional Chinese restaurant. Seating by the canal is with spectacular view. Creative dishes are just icing on the cake. I like the sweet puff and the beef stew noodle soup. A walk along the shops by the canal can help with digesting all the food you ate.

“Not your normal Chinese restaurant”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Food is well prepared and presented well and tasty. Service was very quick. Always seems to be a wait so it's best to come early, say around 11 or 11:30 for lunch. Unfortunately, unless you ask MSG is found in most of its dishes. Some are prepared ahead of time and will have MSG despite requests to omit.

“HK style food”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We went to Cooking Papa twice within the same week. First time was dinner on a weekday and then dim sum on Saturday. Both times the restaurant was full. Luckily, our party was more than 8 so we were able to make a reservation on Saturday. This location was formerly occupied by Mr Fong. Both times, we had tables overlooking the lagoon. As others have mentioned, the service is pretty quick considering the full crowds. For dinner, we had ordered the soup, crispy chicken, walnut shrimp, and vegetables. All of the dishes were very good. For dim sum, we ordered the traditional plates and again, all of them were good. I especially liked the steamed rice wrapped in the lotus leaf. Very tasty. Prices were comparable to other local Chinese restaurants. Noise level was average so we were still able to hold a conversation. Parking can be challenging since there is a supermarket and various other restaurants and local businesses. I would probably come back here again.

“Chinese food with a different taste”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

This is not the typical Chinese restaurant nor fine dining service, so if you are expecting either, this is not the place for you. This place is highly recommended for the food, not their serving style. Unless you have a party of 8 or more, reservation is not accepted. On the weekends, the place is filled in a 1/2 hr after opening at 5:00 pm. So once filled, the wait will be at least an hour for the first group to finish eating. Once they have served all the food, and they see that you have finished eating, they will attempt to rush you out so they can set the table for the next group waiting. So this is not the place if you want to sit and relax after a dinner meal and chit chat with your friends.
But if you are looking for good Chinese food that is not the typical Cantonese, but as several others has referred to as "Hong Kong" style, that tastes quite good and fast services, then this will be a good dining experiences. I was amazed at how good the roasted pork belly was. Other good dishes are the Shanghi style dumpling, sizzling oysters/black bean sauce or oyster-roasted pork claypot, and their selection of seafood.
Their speciality dessert is the Hong Kong egg puff, which you must pre-order when you place your dinner order. Price is typical for a Chinese restuarant or maybe a dollar more per dish ($7-$9).
