“Great hotel - Weird Staff”
Reviewed May 1, 2009

In short - huge, spotlessly clean rooms. Dated decor, great view, parking right outside your room (If you're on the ground floor) right on the beach. Perfect in every way... although the staff are weird. They appear to be androids....friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about the area....it's just that they all talk like they've been programmed. I can't explain it, it's just weird. Any ways, this place is great- very relaxing

I am always apprehensive about a hotel that I have found online. When we checked in, the staff was extremely cordial and informed. They gave us the full rundown of local restaurants including how late they were open. Although the outside of the hotel appears to be the former Comfort Inn that it was, when we entered the room we were more than pleasantly surprised. The fireplace and jacuzzi bath were awesome and the view was outstanding. Drinking a glass of wine on the deck at sunset and waking up to view the ocean without even moving out of bed was heavenly.
The hotel can use some minor decorative improvements, but nothing major.
The walking path directly past the hotel in back was an added feature. It was a lengthy walk to town on the path, but doable.
In town, all the businesses were also very friendly and service was great.
We went horsebackriding on the beach from the Ricochet Ranch and had a great experience. They are very safety concious and take great care of their horses.
We would return to the Ocean View Lodge in a heartbeat and recommend it to everyone.

What started out as a simple misunderstanding turned into an insulting dispute. This was our second stay at the Ocean View Lodge and will be our last!

The cleaning lady knocked on our door approx 10am and I asked her to return later. After a wonderful stroll through downtown Fort Bragg we returned about 5pm to find our room had not been cleaned. The owner told us that the cleaning staff had gone for the day. After pressing her she offered a $15 reduction on a $200 room and said that she would clean the room later that evening.

On checking out she told us that she would not refund even the paltry $15 claiming that we told the cleaning lady that we did not want the room cleaned! This ridiculous accusation was very upsetting and quite petty, especially after spending a weekend there last year and two nights this time.

Next time we will try the Surf & Sand Lodge. The young lady at the front desk took the time to show us rooms which turned out to be much better value for dollar than the Ocean View. Ironically, we have to thank the owner of the Ocean View for opening our eyes to this better deal.

OceanViewLodge, Manager at Ocean View Lodge, responded to this review, February 25, 2009
We apologize for the miscommunication.

One of our houskeepers spoke to the guest and thought the guest did not want her room cleaned. When the guest called the office at 5pm, all of the houskeepers had gone home.

Our owner offered to either clean the room or give her a $15 discount. The guest wanted to the room cleaned, so our owner cleaned the room.

We did what we felt was appropriate to satisfy the customer.

Customer Satisfaction is extremely important to us at the Ocean View Lodge and we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our rooms.

As many funky locally owned beachside places the outside was a bit daunting! But once inside the room was wonderfully Klitzi!. White columns and a step down into the bedroom area made it feel like a suite. Front desk personnel were helpful and friendly. They gave us a tip on a wonderful local homemade ice cream parlor, Cowlick as well as other tips. View was wonderfully incredible and one of the very few actual ( not just a view,) oceanside places to stay. We could walk across the path and down the clift to get to the sand . Weather is cool and a pleasure to get away from the usual August heat of inland California ..The bed comfortable, very clean, towels plentiful, and no complaints. We would stay again but they are not pet friendly and we have started to travel with a hearing service dog..Although service dogs are to be allowed everywhere, we prefer to go to pet friendly hotels on general principle. This is quaint, and old fashioned place... NOT a slick chain type corporate owned property..

We loved the room, great view. We'd had an issue with the desk clerk being VERY rude when she called before we went. If we could have gotten out of the deal at that point we would have. It was to costly to cancel at that point. We complained to the manager and he was little help. We asked to speak to someone above him and were told there "was no one". Other than the rudeness. The rooms were clean and the view beautiful.

My husband and I went here for our anniversary weekend. We had not been to Fort Bragg for over 10 years and were looking forward to a quiet weekend in a comfortable room. We wanted a room on or near the water with a nice view as it was summer and you never know whether you'll be able to go out or just have to stay in and be enveloped by the fog. (As it turned out, we had great weather and were able to be out and about quite a bit!)

We took a top floor room as we thought we might want to sleep with the door/window open to hear the ocean. (The ground floor rooms have hot tubs but the patio is at ground level and I wouldn't have felt as secure leaving windows open.)

My husband likes to get up early and walk 3-4 miles each day. The path behind the motel was at least 3 miles long and he enjoyed walking along the water each day. He also likes to have internet access - which they had here too!

I enjoyed walking on and below the trestle each evening and watching the sunset from our balcony (small - but room for the 2 chairs provided) or the trestle.

We had a wonderful time and will return!

  • Liked — The view and the size of the room.
  • Disliked — It would have been nice to have been closer to 'downtown' so we could have walked.

For a "much needed"getaway, my husband booked us a room at
the Ocean View. What a treat!!
The room was a dream. Quiet, clean, and a view to die for.
The sounds and smells of the ocean were exactly what we needed.
The balcony in our room overlooked the most beautiful view of
an ocean full of life. No scene was ever the same. We just sat there and watched.
If we needed something extra for our room all we needed to do was ask and it was delivered to the room. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeble in directing us to local establishments
that offered what we were looking for.
The front office attendant was more than willing to map out local
places of interest to us that came in so handy to us.
We actually went on her recommendations and we were not let down.
We did get a little disappointed because some of the resturants and shops closed earlier than we anticipated so we did miss those. That just means we catch those first next trip!!
So book your stay with the Ocean View now!
