Husband and I recently returned to the Seabird Lodge in Fort Bragg after 16 years. Our last stay was during our honeymoon 16 years ago. I reserved one of the King Suites, with a view of ocean. It is an older motel and has been around along time. The rooms are not fancy in compared to many of the Inns and B & B’s that surround Mendocino and Fort Bragg, but for with a AAA discount of $69 a night, why the heck not. In addition, we wanted to return to and reminisce in our honeymoon stomping grounds.

Room and bathroom were very clean; liked the added amenities of in room coffee pot, fridge and microwave. View of ocean was great with private balcony for sitting and watching the fog roll in and the rain come down. In room coffee and tea selection was also a nice feature. Bed was a little firm for us, but we slept well and had plenty of pillows. It was quiet and well appointed for our needs during our stay! It was fun to turn back the clocks.

Owners of the Seabird own the Mendocino Chocolate Company and provide a sampling of homemade muffins every morning with yogurt, juice, coffee and tea selections. Plenty to get your day started! The Home Style Café adjacent to the Seabird is fantastic for breakfast! Huge portions, great homemade food at great prices. A must when you stay at the Seabird.

Front office staff was very warm and friendly. For the money…it was a great stay, but if you are looking for fancy, this is not your place. We will definitely return!

Thanks for taking the time to post a review of the Seabird. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Comfortable rooms, great muffins, some rooms with an ocean view and an extremely gracious and helpful staff. Why spend so much for a room in Mendocino??? Hope to see you again soon--not 16 years, but soon! Again, thanks.

We were on a trip from Oregon to San Francisco and decided to return to Fort Bragg where had visited many years ago. We decided to checkout the Seabird Lodge and found it to be a very good bargain. We paid $72 (AAA rate) for a large king room with excellent WiFi, heat, shower and a very comfortable bed. Our room also had a small private patio area outside the room. The motel is on the south end of town and is quite convenient to town and the harbor area. The breakfast is actually quite nice with muffins, yogurt, juice, coffee and some other things. The staff was very accommodating and provided excellent service and local information. The major plus for motels in this area was the provision of a pool and a superior jacuzzi. We stayed here for 2 nights and loved the spa experience. They provided pool towels and were generous with coffee and other items. After reading some of the other whining reviews of this motel I wonder what those folks expected for their value priced stay. This motel was excellent and we will return when we visit Fort Bragg again.

Thank you, very much, for your review of the Seabird. Our indoor pool and spa are hits with our guests. Very relaxing after a busy day exploring our beautiful part of the world. Glad you enjoyed our morning offerings--I enjoy making the muffins for our guests -- tomorrow morning we will have the following varieties; blueberry, lemon/poppyseed, chocolate/chocolate chip and bran/zucchini. Thanks for mentioning our excellent staff. They are tops!!! The off season is an excellent time to visit the Mendocino Coast--the crowds are gone, the scenery is spectacular and our rates are very friendly! See you on your next visit to the coast!

Two people stayed for $83 with tax. There is a breakfast included which consists of juice, coffee, yogurt, and muffins. We stayed on a Friday night in November and I think we were one of two guests in the entire building. We didn't pay for an ocean view, we simply told them we would prefer the second floor. We had our own private balcony which gave us a far-off view of the ocean. The hotel is off the main road a bit, which is nice for sleeping.

The room was clean, the staff friendly, and the bed comfortable. If you are deciding between sleeping at Fort Bragg or heading south to Mendacino, chose Fort Bragg - unless you are a millionaire. The downtown area is a nice place to wander about in the morning, but plan to spend the majority of your time exploring Mendacino.

We spent 4 nights here in a second floor, king-sized bed, ocean view room. Due to fog, it wasn't until our last morning that we actually saw the view. It's a partial, pretty far away view, and while it's certainly better than nothing, I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Our room came with a 32" flat screen TV with over 50 cable stations (including HBO), free local calls, free wifi (speeds ranged from 12 to over 50 mbps, with never a connection problem), desk with 2 chairs, dresser, fridge, microwave. There was a sink with counter space near the bathroom, which had a tub/shower. Bed, pillows, and linen were comfortable. Street noise was not an issue, nor was noise from adjoining rooms (perhaps unoccupied) or the relatively quiet in-room fridge. Plenty of lighting, too. Clean, comfortable, quiet, and reasonably priced. It’s all that we ask for in a motel, but it isn’t always easy to find at this price level.

Not much to their breakfast, but it beats nothing at all. The muffins are delicious IF you heat them a bit in a microwave.

Thank you very much for your kind words! We appreciate you taking the time to post a review. The upstairs west facing rooms have distant ocean views--at no additional cost--request when booking. Our guests do enjoy the fresh-baked morning muffins. Hope to see you again soon.

The toilet was ridiculously small, hard for a man to use, but not the worst I've encountered. I don't know what idiot made the decision to install these tiny toilets, but the few dollars they may have saved will be lost due to lost future business. This was the only problem serious enough to make me consider staying elsewhere in the future. My wife and I come to the area frequently so we have stayed in many places. Other problems include noise transfer through walls--it was actually annoyingly loud when someone turned on the bathroom fan in the room behind us, but if he didn't turn it on, we could hear the man urinating so that wasn't great either. It was also annoying that the only light in the toilet/shower area was a heat lamp, and it was on the same switch as the fan. Counter around sink was a bit small. Mattress was a bit old & hard, but not terrible.
The room was pretty good size, but due to the layout & furniture arrangement it was a bit cramped. Sink was out in room, so that is good. Room was VERY CLEAN, so that is the most import consideration. I don't care if it was "outdated," as some have complained. The price was much better than any "updated" room you might find in the area. Breakfast was decent--numerous muffin choices & yogurt choices. More light or plain yogurts would have been nice. Pool was plenty warm and the pool/hut tub area was nice and well-ventilated so no excessive chlorine smell. No AC I guess but with the weather we had, 60's 7 low 70's, didn't need it. Overall, we kind of liked it here and may stay again, but as I said, with the tiny toilet I might not want to come back unless the price is really good compared to other options.

Thanks for posting a review of the Seabird. Our dedicated housekeeping staff does a great job! Glad you found your room VERY CLEAN. Thank you for recognizing their efforts. The indoor heated pool and hot tub are popular with our guests--whether to get some exercise or just to soothe away the adventures of the day. I enjoy making the muffins -- blueberry, bran/zucchini, maraschino cherry/white chocolate, cranberry/orange, chocolate/chocolate chip, lemon poppyseed and others. Thanks, again.

This hotel has some of the nicest staff I have talked to when checking in to a hotel! The reason I am only giving this hotel an "Average" rating is because there are a few improvements that could be made.

1.) The pool! It was pretty cold outside (which is normal for Fort Bragg, we go often) and I was surprised at how cold the "Heated" pool was. The Hot tub was nice, but I had my 2 year old niece with me so we thought the pool would be perfect for her (didn't want her to go in the hot tub) but after about 5 to 10 minutes none of us could stand it anymore and our lips were purple. I also left a note with the front desk when checking out about the pool being cold.

2.) There was a spider on the wall in our room above the head board! I am not afraid of spiders so it didn't bother me, but when you are paying for a room that is not something that you should have to deal with.

3.) As I had read in the previous reviews about the pool towels, they were totally on point! The pool towels were so small and thin and scratchy :-/. The bath towels were just fine. But the pool towels wouldn't even fit around any of us. However the were the perfect size for my 2 year old niece! We had brought our own beach towels so it ended up being fine.

Those were the 3 major things that I noticed needed improvement! We would probably try staying again in the future, I just hope they listen to us on our reviews and seriously take into consideration little upgrades here and there. I know it can be expensive and I wasn't expecting luxury, but a real "heated" pool and better towels would be a great start!

I didn't get a chance to try the famous home made muffins, but if we come again I will be sure to! We also appreciated that we were able to have a later check out. (Instead of 11 they let us stay until 12) Which was nice because we had went Abalone diving in the morning.

Room Tip: If you can, pick the rooms that are attached to the lobby, the detached building has rooms that are...

Thanks for taking the time to post a review of the Seabird. We keep the pool at about 83 degrees. Over the years we have found that to be the best temperature balance for the serious swimmer and the leisure play/splash type swimmer. The hot tub is kept at about 100 degrees. Sorry about the spider--it happens on occasion. We do have a regular monthly service to keep on top of things. Glad you recognized the quality of our guestroom towels--we use higher quality towels than many other mid range hotels. The pool towels get a lot of abuse and we just can't use the same quality towels there that we provide in the guestrooms. Hope to see you on a future visit to the Coast.
