We had a delightful meal here - the service was spot on and the food was very well done and presented. It was a great night out now that our favorite restaurant down on the water went out of business

I have eaten at the Mendo Bistro several times in the past but not recently. I had heard from others it was not as good as it had been but was open to go as I had previously enjoyed it. We had a party of 10 and we were there for a birthday celebration.
When we arrived at the time of our reservation we could not be seated as the table was not set yet the restaurant was far from full. It was irritating but not any reason to expect that it would not be a great evening.
When we were seated it took a very long time for anyone to acknowledge our presence, not even water was brought to our table which seems like it is usually the first thing that happens after being seated. Once our waitress came over things started moving fairly smoothly, we ordered champagne and wine and followed with our dinner orders.
Our salads etc. arrived in a timely manner. However, when dinner started to arrive, two of us got our entree first, a sweet potato gnocchi. We waited fully 5 minutes or more before the rest of the food arrive, the gnocchi entree's getting cold while we waited out of courtesy to those that had not been served. Not sure if the food delivery was so spread out because of the ineptness of the kitchen staff or if it was a server problem but it was not acceptable.
Once all of our food arrived most found it acceptable but nothing great. The sauce on the sweet potato gnocchi was overbearing and thick which somehow did not compliment the dense gnocchi. One of the our party had the mushroom risotto, she was not happy with the consistency of the risotto and said she could not taste the mushrooms. Another person had a filet mignon which cost $29.00, it was very small to say the least. That said the vegetables served with the meals was quite good including snap peas and spaghetti squash ( the squash was the highlight of my meal).
In terms of service and why I rated it poor. At one point while we were eating one of our party spilled a glass of red wine, we were finished eating but the plates had not yet been cleared . The plates were cleared, dessert menu's were delivered and still no one offered to clean up the spill. We actually did not say anything to the wait staff just to see how long it would be before they did something, it never happened. Finally we took our napkins and blotted it up the best we could before it started dripping on our clothes, This was very unacceptable, in fact two of the folks in our party had been waiters and they were so incensed and angry about the lack of responsiveness to the spill they could barely contain themselves.
So, would I recommend the Mendo Bistro to you? Well there are not a lot of places of any quality to eat in Fort Bragg, your choices are limited. That said, there is an Italian restaurants you might want to check out along with Silver's at the Wharf, there are also some fine restaurants in Mendocino only 9 miles away. Suffice it to say you can do better than Mendo Bistro.

A local resident recommended the Mendo Bistro to us while we were visiting the area. We found it in the old Union Lumber Company store building, which has been remodeled into an indoor "mall" of shops and eateries. The building interior is worth a visit on its own--gorgeous redwood paneling and timbers--everything is redwood! The restaurant is located on the mezzanine, with open railings and views to the floor below, and large plate glass windows overlooking the street. Service was prompt and attentive, the specials were described in detail with the prices, and we had time to look the menu over before deciding on our drinks. I had the pappardelle with chicken paprikash; it was delicious, and about as good as comfort food can be. My husband had the hanger steak--tasty, but a bit more gristle at one end than he expected. Everything is prepared on site, including the pasta and bread, which are fresh and excellent. Very pleasant.

Dining in northern California can be hit or miss especially when an old town depends on tourists. The Mendo Bistro which is on the mezzanine offers charm in a lumbering mercantile building. They say the food is local and fresh and seasonal, all pluses. The menu had some interesting items that included fresh pasta and (according to the menu) foods designed by its award winning chef. The staff was friendly and the large bar was on street level.
In addition to a salad, we had a calamari appetizer (so different from that served in Italian restaurants on the East coast), a pasta entre and a fish entre. Unfortunately, neither entre lived up to its press: the pasta had too much shaved parmesan on a dish that the menu reported had no added cheese and the fish was dry.
Even though we were somewhat disappointed, we would give the place a second try because the food had promise, the menu was interesting and the atmosphere was a plus especially as the sun went down.

It was just okay, not great. The place is well decorated and very big. The service was good but I expected the food to be much better.
