“Great Deal for the area”
Reviewed June 7, 2009

We stayed here on June 7th, 2009 and got a double queen bed room for $109, they were asking $139 but after my wife and I went to checkout the room (which was nice, clean and newly upgraded) the hotel desk attendant gave us a $30 discount. We called and walked into several area hotels and they all smelled and were outdated. This was the only one we found that didn't look like it was 30+ years old.

My wife and I stayed here five years ago, and loved it then. She and my kids planned a surprise getaway for us this past weekend including staying here, and riding the Skunk Train the next morning.

We arrived around 8:30 p.m., and were greeted by the night agent, who was very courteous and friendly. She offered cookies to the kids, and addressed my wife and I by Mr. & Mrs. each time we saw her.

There were signs in the elevator indicating the hotel was going through a remodel. When we walked into our room, two-queens with a view, The room looked very clean and also like it had been remolded. The carpet looked really new, as did the rest of the room. It had the new HIE "Smart" line, including their signature bedding/mattresses, bath towels, shower curtains, and toiletries.

The view was of the creek area to the side of the hotel, and if you looked out the window to the right, you could see the ocean.

I commented on this at check-out the next morning and the manager said that the remodel was only on the third floor so far (we stayed on the 2nd). I then said that they did a great job keeping the rooms up then, as our room looked great.

They have an indoor pool, which is a boon for Ft. Bragg. They also had a hot-tub, but we did not use it as the water was too hot for the kids. I noticed a small work-out room next to the breakfast area which had a few machines.

Speaking of breakfast, they offered the new line of hot foods, including cheese omelets, sausage patties, and biscuits and gravy along side the typical continental breakfast fare.

It was only a three-minute drive from the hotel to downtown, where the train depot is, along with the botanical gardens & glass beach.

I think this was a really nice HIE, and the chain is going through a great re-imaging. This particular property shows pride in ownership.

This hotel was the most expensive of 10 nights we stayed in California and Oregon, $163.45 with tax. Primarily because of this it was also one of our least favorite. The hallway carpet and elevator carpet need to be updated. Room was very clean however, bed was comfortable. No internet, but the night clerk was nice enough to let me use the one in the office. Any hotel should have access to the internet. Breakfast was standard HIE.

Only stayed here for one short night. Hotel was convenient and clean. Our room faced a road (route 20) and we had to keep the windows closed to avoid the noise. However, the beds were very comfortable and we fell asleep quickly. A good place to stay for the price.

This is a nice, reasonably-priced choice for those wanting to explore the Mendocino area. My family of 5 stayed 2 nights in a large room with 2 queen beds. We also brought in a rollaway which fit nicely. The room appeared to have been updated recently with new carpet and stone on the window sill and bathroom counter.

There was a complementary breakfast downstairs which was very adequate, and the kids were able to do some swimming in the indoor pool. The only issue with this hotel is that there is no laundry facility for guests, so you have to go to the scary laundromat across the street in the Boatyard shopping center.

All in all I don't think you can beat this place for value and location.

We stayed here for 1 night and that was enough - i will never use this brand again! - we booked 3 rooms for our party - they all had an unclean smell - one in particular smelt of animals - one of the room faced onto the road and was very noisy - we requested a quieter room which was at the rear beside the other 2 rooms - we were told that this was a more expensive room as there was a balcony - which there wasn't - the lady came to check and was amazed and said that the room was beiing sold as having a balcony. Lift was smelly and need refurbished and the whle place was run down and horrible - even at the rear of the hotel there was a road and road noise - we couldn't open the window. Breakfast typical standard H I fare and horrible - there was no internet facility and no laundry - staff seemed unsure and there were a few language problems.

The Holiday Inn Express was very quiet - despite being on Hwy 20. We had windows that opened up to a nice green area, and slept with the windows open all night. We did hear someone walking up the stairs outside our room (we were on the first floor) once or twice in the early evening - but other than that, we heard no noise from other rooms or outside the hotel.

Room was large for a standard hotel chain room. My in-laws stayed in the room next to us - and made the comment that they wished their bedroom at home was as large!

Breakfast in the morning was adequate - not spectacular, but a nice variety of fruit, cereal, yogurt, juices, sweet rolls, toast, bagels, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs (eggs tasted and looked like they were made from a dried mix). Breakfast is included with your room, and is buffet style from 6:30 am until 9:30 am.

This hotel is great for people who want a quiet place to stay that is close to Mendocino and Fort Bragg attractions. It is NOT on the beach, but within very close driving distance. We would stay here again.
