“Great service, incredibly overpriced property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

We stayed here for a girls weekend in June. Having stayed in national park lodges before, I didn't want that old park "rustic" experience so chose this spot just outside the Wawona entrance. Staff are friendly and helpful. Restaurant food (as a captive audience) was good but VERY expensive, even for breakfast. There's a coffee bar (like Starbucks) for grabbing quick snacks, which worked well for breakfast on the go.

Rooms were comfortable (including bathtubs) but showed signs of wear, especially in the bath. Rooms overlooking the pool will have noise which is even louder when you open the window to get fresh air.

They do multiple weddings here every weekend in summer on the beautifully kept grounds, so be prepared for that (parking, restaurants, lobby, etc.). The spa was very nice - great service with prices that rival the most expensive places at resorts in other parts of the country. They no longer accept SpaFinder gift cards which was a surprise to me, after receiving one as a gift that I couldn't use.

Gift shop had Aventura shorts, dresses and tops in stock - nice find! And other decent souvenirs mixed in with the usual tourist items.

Room rates were the biggest shock - nearly $400 per night for a basic room that we booked 6 months in advance. It's high season and there are few decent options so just be prepared. In all, I spent as much on a weekend here as I did on international travel earlier in the year.

We had an incredible stay at Tenaya. It is a robust, self contained, resort-style property in an area where it's difficult to find that kind of thing. There are multiple dining options (food was generally pretty good...we only ate at Timberloft Pizzeria and Jackalopes). The pool area is really really nice. We got lucky and had a very warm day while we were there and were able to spend a few hours. There's plenty of chairs, couches and cabanas for use and there's plenty for kids. They offer complimentary swim diapers for too. The pool bar had plenty of options and the bartender was extremely friendly and attentive. The property is expansive and well maintained. The main lobby is really quite a sight (towering ceilings, a huge fireplace). We stayed in Cottage Suite (1 king/1 queen) and loved the room. It was the entire second floor of the cottage though, and there areny elevators in these buildings, so if your travel heavy be aware of that. The room was clean and very modern, The bathroom had granite, new fixtures and was really nice. The location is great. You're about 3 or 4 minutes by car to the Southern gate of Yosemite. From there... 10 minutes to the Sequoias ...10 minutes to Wawona.. and a little more than an hour to the valley floor. Do that drive! It's amazing. We had a great stay at Tenaya and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Cottages are seperate from the main building but walking distance (no elevators in cottages)

Thank you very much for your lovely review of Tenaya Lodge. It appears your family had a spectacular vacation! We are delighted you enjoyed your stay in The Cottages which offer a more intimate experience among native sugar pine trees in comparison to our main building. And you are spot on in recommending the drive from Tenaya to the Valley Floor. It is certainly packed with photo opportunities and we highly recommend it, too!. Thank you again for your comments. We hope to have the opportunity to serve your family again in the future.

After a long drive this was a very welcome retreat with comfortable beds, a clean bathroom and warm friendly service. There is no shortage of things for children to do - although look outside for the fun as the games room had machines out of order or that swallowed your cash! It also has one of those rarer treats when travelling with family and that is a laundry which wasn't too expensive.

Room Tip: We stayed in the wing upstairs to the left of the bears - after looking at some of the other reviews...

I stayed here two nights on a recent tour. We ate at the breakfast buffet and had dinner in the Sierra Restaurant, the main hotel restaurant. Breakfast was good (not great), but dinner was fabulous. Not only did they make bottled water available (the tap is heavily chlorinated), they were happy to accommodate our dietary needs for low salt and no cheese. The food was fresh and well prepared and the service was attentive without being overbearing.

The rooms were adequate but nothing special. I felt like I was in a Holiday Inn, not a fancy lodge. The hallways were noisy and space between the bathroom door and sink was odd so that the door opened into the sink making it impossible for someone to open the door if another was at the sink.

We used the spa services which were nice. The only other complaint is the pool. During the two nights we were there, we tried to go to the pool four times. It was raining, so we were stuck with the indoor pool. Unfortunately, even though we had been hiking all day and were in sore need of the hot tub, both of them were crowded with children who were playing loudly. For a fancy hotel that tries to win over honeymooning couples, why isn't there a no kids after 8p in the indoor rule or something similar.

Overall, I would stay there again, but with modified expectations.

This lodge is an attractive mountain hotel. Very noisy. We thought it was a thundering herd above us and we could hear the TV next to us. The food is quite good, and they have three options for dining. We lucked out with a package that included breakfast. If you want music in your room, or HBO, or Wi-fi it is extra. These kinds of things should be included, as indeed most places do not charge. Service was excellent. All in all it was pretty average.

Room Tip: Location is great. Near the entrance.

Thank you for taking a moment to comment on your recent stay at Tenaya Lodge. We are very sorry if you encountered more noise than usual. Yosemite National Park is a four-season destination, but the highest levels of visitation do occur during the summer months. Visiting Yosemite in fall and winter can actually offer a deeper level of engagement with its wonders – highly recommended! However, we're delighted you found our customer service to be excellent and enjoyed our dining options as well as your breakfast package. One thing we want to clarify is that in summer Tenaya offers five seasonal dining options that reflect California's bountiful culinary scene. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

The lobby is the best thing about this hotel, it is stunning.......however the rooms are extremely dated and felt (and smelt) like a retirement home. Concierge was helpful and nice, gave good advice as we stayed two days on our honeymoon so wanted to know the best things. It is VERY expensive for what you get, although most other hotels in Yosemite looked very expensive also. We would return to Yosemite but not to this hotel.

On the plus side:
An absolutely beautiful setting.
A great egg white omelette for breakfast.
Gluten free bread!
Wonderful waitress named Connie.
Very good massage with Michelle.

On the negative side:
Rooms looks like they haven't been redone for many years. I understand that this is a lodge and should be somewhat rustic. But the dark colors in the sleeping room make the place appear dirty. Maybe I am just used to seeing lots of white on hotel beds.
Noisiest hotel I have stayed at in a very long time. The acoustics/soundproofing between the floors is non-existent. When people above me were walking around, I heard every step and thought they were in the room with me. Both mornings they were up at 6:30 and walking back & forth, back & forth.
The bartender shouted across the room to ask me for my room number. Really??????
My friend's son was being married at the lodge (reason for the stay) and there were many, many problems with the arrangements.
Since there are a lot of children in this hotel, there is a lot of noise. Children running up & down the hallways constantly. Where are their parents?

I have a very hard time understanding how this hotel rated a 4 diamond review. I think it is very overpriced.

Room Tip: I was told that the fourth floor of one of the buildings was very quiet. I would definitely recomme...

We would like to thank you for taking the time to detail both the positives and negatives of your experience at Tenaya Lodge. We’re happy to learn that you enjoyed our beautiful setting, the massage service at our all new LEED-Certified Ascent Spa, and that our menus offered items tailored your dietary preferences. Yosemite National Park is a four-season destination, but the highest levels of visitation occur during the summer months. We’re sorry if you encountered more noise than usual along with a few little guests who could have used a bit more parental supervision. Having earned our Four Diamond designation based on the rigorous standards of AAA, 100% guest satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us. We sincerely hope to have another chance to upgrade your experience in the future. Should that opportunity arise, please reach out to us in advance of your stay by calling Yvonne Moreno at (559) 683-6555. Thanks again!
