Four adults went on trip and could have skipped this. We had already been to Yosemite Valley and hiked some beautiful trails prior. So scenery on this train ride was okay. Steam train was interesting. Nice trip for children 14 and under. Panning for gold was fun, informative not lengthy. Gold panning cost an additional $10 and you do get to find flecks of real gold because the gravel is "salted" beforehand. Kids were loving it. Two departures the Friday we were there and both started late. We bought tickets for the 12:30pm ride and we didn't get going until about 1:15. They said they were having trouble with the audio system. Nonetheless, I'd take the kids.

Went for a drive and ended up at the Yosemite sugar pine railroad. Big train was not running but the jenny cars were. Cost $36 for me my 10 year old and my 5 year old and heard a lot of history. Once we got to bottom of the hill the kids didn't want to explore so our driver gabby took us over to the side and showed us the difference from a sugar pine and a ponderosa pine was. Trip only took about half hour but well worth it. We are ready to go back again for the steam train. My 5 year old wants to have her birthday in August there

We were very disheartened when we turned up to the station slightly late and watched the train chug on past us, however luckily the great staff took us up on a train car to meet the huge Locomotive. Not only was the journey stunningly beautiful but also an educational look back at logging history.

We have been going up to the train for years, this is the first time we have ever done the steam train in December. Due to the dry and warm weather, Max (the owner and longtime friend) decided to pull the big trains out and open. Lot's of people out enjoying the nice weather. Great outing for kids and adults alike. Not a fast ride, but not something you get to do everyday. Food available there, but you can bring a picnic too, plenty of tables at the station. If you think ahead, you can take the first train down, picnic at the turnaround and take the second train of the day back, you just need to let the conductor or engineer know you are staying down and taking the second train back. This usually only works in the Summer when there is an 11am and a 12:30pm train to follow.
