The Narrow Gauge Inn loved up to expectation on all counts for us and we really enjoyed the three nights we had there. it's just on the edge of the park near the south entrance, so it's around an hour's drive into Yosemite valley, but closer to Mariposa. A good tip would be to go there first, right after breakfast as the grove's car park fills up really quickly and then you need to take the shuttle, which adds over an hour to the visit.
Our room was clean and comfortable and the balcony was a really good bonus for the end of a day of hiking. After being charged $4.50 each for a beer the first night, we picked up beers from a local convenience store the remaining nights to drink on our balcony.
Food in the restaurant is excellent, though breakfast in the morning is very poor with the coffee in particular being memorable for having no taste at all, even by the standards of typically weak (for us Europeans) American coffee.
The hot tub has a sign-up sheet, but we went in around 4pm when we got back from the park and it was easy to get signed up and the hot-tub is a good temperature and very vigourous.
