“Great location, great service!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

We spent five nights at the Inn. We staying in a downstairs queen bedroom. The setting was superb! Birds and the smell of the trees awoke us every morning. We were just a few miles South of Yosemite National Park entrance and it took us between 45 - 60 minutes to drive to Yosemite Valley.

The bed was firm and comfortable. The service was simply outstanding and everyone was so very friendly. We highly recommend requesting a nice hot belgian waffle during breakfast, and dining at the adjacent restaurant for dinner. They also have many souvenirs to choose from in the main office and you'll receive at 15% discount if you're staying at the inn. Oh, and check out Marty's Garden too!

The only downsides were the too hot, too cold running showers and the paper thin wall between our room and the next. But if you book far in advance, the benefits far out-way the costs.

Oh, and gas up in Oakhurst about 14 miles to the South. The only gas station between you and Yosemite Valley is at Wowona and they charge almost a dollar more per gallon.

Room Tip: If we go back, we'd request an upstairs room on the end.

IN April 2013 we spent two days in this excellent Hotel.
The Hotel is located in the wonderful nature of the Yosemite/San Juan valley (just 1 hour from the Yosemite village).
The rooms are very compfortable and perfectly clean.
Every detail is exquisitely chosen in a harmonious way.
The personnell is very gentle and nice.

AND THE FOOD IS GREAT. THE ONLY PLACE DURING ALL OUR TRIP WHERE WE DIDN'T MISS THE ITALIAN KITCHEN.
I highly recommend it to everybody.

We stayed here for two night in September as all the options in Yoesemite were either booked up or really pricey and it was really lovely. Location wise it is just by the south gate, but is bit of a drive to the main site. We arrived pretty late so the reception had closed but they had left our key and info about the hotel ready for us. The room was massive with a huge wooden double bed and a beautiful forest view. We had been warned when we booked that we were below the restaurant so might hear some noise but we didn’t notice anything. The staff were really friendly and the whole place had a nice family run vibe.

I had read great things about the restaurant but I have to say I wasn’t especially impressed. Don’t get me wrong, the food and service were both nice enough but nothing to get overly excited about.

Nice little place. Friendly service. Immaculate housekeeping. It's very close to the South YOSEMITE gate (close proximity to the Mariposa Grove Sequoias & Badger Pass). But the main valley floor where the big sights are like Half Dome is over one winding hour away. Beautiful drive though. I would go back to Narrow Gauge gladly.

We booked this out of the lonely planet guide while enroute to Yosemite. It is a delightful, old world Inn in a peaceful location just outside Yosemite national park. The rooms are simple but comfortable, the food is excellent. We had our wedding anniversary dinner there and it was perfect. It is right next to the sugar pine railway which is well worth a visit. we had an unexpected snowfall and it was just magic.

I was looking for a decent hotel that's inside the Sierra Nevada protected zone (which includes Yosemite itself and the surrounding forests) that's not too expensive. So this hotel is about a 4 minute drive from the entrance to Yosemite (could be 10 minutes if the roads are snowy) and about an hour from the Yosemit Valley which is the part of the park where the big, expensive hotels are in and where most visitors hang out. Turn an hour into an hour and a half or even two if the roads are super bad, but in Yosemite's defense let it be known that the roads are cleared and plowed many times a day. This is the South entrance of the park, which is right near Mariposa Grove - the place where you go to see the giant sequoias! An amazing place.

The hotel itself is in the mountains in high elevation which gives it an adventurous feel. Also the hour-long drive to the valley is very picturesque and goes through some pristine habitat where rare animals can sometimes be seen along the way (bobcats, coyotes, martens, fishers, mountain lions, weasels, etc.) but you would have to be extremely lucky to see them. I did see a marten at 6am.

The hotel staff was extremely nice and very accomodating. When I first arrived they advised me that I needed chains to get into the park because of the snow. At first I thought they were trying to make a quick buck off me (chains are about $80) but later it turned out that they were exactly right and there were check points in the park and you would get a fine if you didn't have chains, or wouldn't be let in any further. The staff also showed me how to install the chains myself to avoid having to pay someone $30 along the road to install them. But even more surprisingly - one of my chains broke the following morning, and the lady in the counter just GAVE me a new pair!! How nice of her!!!

MAKE SURE YOU ARE AWARE that the hotel restaurant is closed in the winter, so eat inside the park or in the nearest town. But breakfast is provided and is heafty and tasty - which they give you in a basket so that you can eat in your room at your leisure, or on the balcony or wherever. I personally took it with me into the park very early in the morning, and ate it in the valley watching the sunrise over the mountins. The rooms are comfortable enough, but again, this is a mountain lodge and not a 5-star resort. The bed was comfortable and the TV had basic cable with the regular channels. A hot-water shower (not a tub) and a sink and a heating system make this room just comfortable enough for an adventurous outing to Yosemite. But I could definitely see it being used for a few nights on a romantic adventure or a small family.

This is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than the hotels inside the park and the quality of service is very good. If you don't mind the hour drive from the valley it's an excellent choice, but again, keep in mind that you don't have to spend all your time in the valley; there are plenty of sights and trails in upper Yosemite that are less visited but not less rewarding.
