“Only okay”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

The service is okay but the prices are on the high side for the area. The food is over spiced over cheesed. I would much prefer traditional Italian cooking to what they serve here.

“Don't Order the Pizza”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Since our usual pizzeria is closed on Mondays, we decided to give our local Mama Mia’s a whirl on Labor Day. A couple of years back, a neighbor became ill after eating pasta with clam sauce there, and urged us to avoid it. However, we’d heard that it was under new management, and figured that pizza would be a safe choice. And we’ve never encountered a truly bad pizza, even when making our own. We went for half Vegetarian’s Delight and half Church’s Choice, a meat combo.

We wondered why our to-go pizza wasn’t cut all the way through, but then realized the difficulty as we used both pizza cutter and knife to try to cut through the slices. The crust was tough on the bottom, and at the same time very soggy on the top. It seems like the restaurant uses bread dough instead of pizza crust dough, and they don’t pre-bake it before loading wet toppings on. Even the first pieces were limp, weighted down, and difficult to eat without dropping the toppings off. Eating leftover slices is out of the question, the even soggier dough is just “ick.” At least we can use the leftover cold toppings on a homemade salad.

The toppings were fresh, and they tasted good. But as you can see from the Vegetarian’s Delight photo, they were unequally distributed, leaving bare spots and overloaded areas which were hard to eat, especially with the limp crust. The menu says that Vegetarian’s Delight is topped with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, olives, artichoke hearts, and fresh tomatoes. As the photo shows, there were very few artichokes, bell peppers, olives, or mushrooms. There were plenty of tomatoes, which tended to make the soggy crust soggier. The Church’s Choice (meat combo) had pepperoni (which we asked them to hold), salami, mushrooms, and sausage. Oddly, there was some Italian ham added to our pizza, but this turned out to be the tastiest meat, and not too salty. The sausage was quite bland and oily.

As we know, there is never a second chance to make a first impression. We won’t be returning. If you’re in Felton and hungry for pizza, skip Mama Mia’s and go around the corner to Redwood Pizza—or drive yourself down to Santa Cruz if it’s Monday.

“Great Experience”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Great Experience. The new management can be seen in the improved service and food. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good. I had the calamari with lemon pasta which was light and filling.

“EXCELLENT EVENING HERE! FABULOUS!”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

After a wonderful evening in Carmel at the Monterey Symphony we came here for a delightful dinner - the atmosphere was just beautiful! The service was prompt, the food prepared perfectly - he had short ribs and I had the lamb - FANTASTIC! There was enough of the lamb dinner for 2 more meals the next day, and absolutely delicious, too. Have eaten here for YEARS but hadn't been here for about a year and a half - still excellent as ever! Good deals and top quality food make me realize we have to come here much more often! Convenient and quick, charming dining rooms and was SO glad to have topped off a wonderful evening by eating at Mama Mia's!
