Fall River Hotel
Reviewed May 28, 2012

We had dinner last night at the Fall River Hotel. They made us wait in the bar for nearly 1/2 hour, although the restaurant appeared to have space. The food is very mediocre. But the topper of the evening was when we had car trouble, the manager (I think this old angry guy might be the owner), refused to help us, and simply slammed the door in our face as he closed up for the evening. (Note we had three children with us.) The guy was strangely grumpy throughout the evening, and it definitely tarnished our view of the place.
I will never come back to this hotel or restaurant (and I fish regularly on Fall River).

Vintage charm... Vintage plumbing, soundproofing, heating etc.... Unless you stay in the New rooms. These are very nice. Food is usually ok, but can run hot & cold, depending on whose cooking. I prefer this hotel over 'Spinners' despite the setting at Spinners.

We stayed at the Fall River Hotel and purchased their Fun Package which included dinners and breakfasts. The main hotel includes a cafe, restaurant, and a very small bar. The main areas of the hotel are charming and historic in feel. We stayed in one of the courtyard rooms which was very spacious, completely and nicely updated, and included a king sized bed, sofa, small flat screen tv, large fridge with freezer, etc. It was very clean and comfortable. We found the Fun Package to not be a great deal. While the restaurant attempts to be upscale, we found the service and food to be lacking. The first night, I ordered pasta primevera and received the alfredo pasta instead which was very bland. The blackened rib eye my boyfriend ordered was just peppered - and not truly blackened. The horseradish was good, but he was very disappointed in his meal. The first mini loaf of bread we received seemed fresh, but the second seemed reheated. Service was very slow and we got few refills of water, etc. My boyfriend had to leave the table at one point to hunt down the waitress for something we'd asked for earlier and never received. At the end of the meal, our server was apologetic and brought us out a free slice of cake. It had just been made that day ,and she described it as a yellow cake with blackberries and a milk chocolate frosting. I didn't expect much, but it turned out to be one of the BEST cakes we have ever eaten. We ordered several more slices of it during our stay - including a couple to go - it was that good. We even got the name of the staff person who made it so that we could request it again before our next trip.

Unfortunately, dinner the next night was worse. Even though prime rib is advertised for Friday and Saturday nights, and my boyfriend had been looking forward to it, they did not have prime rib available. Service was even slower that night even though there were only two other occupied tables. We had to ask multiple times for everything as the waitress kept forgetting. He asked so many times and had to wait so long for horseradish, his meat was cold by the time he got it.

Our two breakfasts were fantastic though. Again, service was slow (long waits between refills, etc.), but the morning waitress was very pleasant, and the food was generous and delicious. Unfortunately, because of our poor dinner experiences, we will not do the Fun Package again.

Before we left, we asked to see a larger room in the main hotel in case we wanted to return with our entire family. I was very glad we got a courtyard room, as the room we looked at in the main hotel, although large, was very worn and outdated. The main bed looked like a very thin mattress on sinking bed springs. We may try it just because it would be a step up from camping and would fit us all, but if this is any indication of the rest of the main hotel rooms, I would not recommend them.

Room Tip: If you want clean, updated, and comfortable, choose a courtyard room. I think the main hotel rooms...

Fall River Mills is a small but beatiful town surrounded by hay fields, wild rice fields and a beautiful river. We fly in to the airport and stay at this hotel. Our room was on the second floor with a queen bed , a sitting room, and a bathroom. Not the Ritz but a fun experience for a nights stay. Hotels like this are becoming a thing of the past. There is also a courtyard on the side with several rooms that are part of the hotel,,although I've never seen those rooms.
Nice bar and restaurant downstairs with great food.

This is a small town the way small towns should be. In less than 24 hours, I knew the owners of local Hal & Kathy's, got invited to the BIG weekend wedding over in Pittville, Shared breakfast and conversation with an 80-something born and raised in Fall River Mills Mr. Brown, and shopped at the local Ray's Food Place.

So what does all of that have to do with the hotel? Plenty! The hotel is what I would hope to find in this small town. Historic. Comfy rooms. Old-fashioned. Not a the Ritz! But friendly staff. Clean. Wi-Fi. Cable TV. Great bar action and a wonderful restaurant and cafe. Loved the homemade wild rice pancakes. There wasn't enough time to for eating on this trip but still managed to get in more than my share.

The hotel is on Main Street. Small and faded. It must have been bustling once upon a time. I enjoyed wandering. Enjoyed a cold beer at the hotel bar. The place was filling up fast on the weekend of the cutting horse show in McArther. In fact, the hotel was sold out. So I was lucky I booked early.

Star ratings keep in mind aren't apples and apples. They are often apples and oranges. After all what's 4 stars in Fall River Mills wouldn't rock your world in San Francisco. I had a great time here and would definitely go back. Perfect location for fly-fishers, Burney Falls, Lassen, and just exploring the beauty of this corner of northeastern California.

Room Tip: Ask about rooms away from Main Street. I was perfectly content with my view of the town.
