“Nice family hotel”

One of the top family hotels in Eureka --- large rooms, good service, decent pool area, quiet considering it's on 101, nice conference facilities. Would stay there again.

A great value from Priceline. For less than $70 per night, we got a remodeled room with a great bed, excellent shower and very clean. The view was of the parking lot and the highway, but those items did not matter. We used the central location to explore both north and south during our 3-day trip.

The hotel stated that all the rooms have now been remodeled. Might be safe again to check into the Red Lion - Eureka.

We checked in (3) of us one of which was my elderly mom. We got to the room and 2 hrs later had to call 911 for my mom who was very ill.
The staff was very helpful to us all through this and seemed to be concerned. I can't say enough good about this hotel and it's staff during an emergency situation like this.
Mom ended up having to have her gallbladder out and the staff asked each time we either came in or left how she was doing and even gave us a lower medical emergency rate!!! The service of the hotel was excellent and I would stay there again and again.

The rooms smelled. They were also dirty; cobwebs, dust & dead insects. Toilet was dirty as well. For our second night we moved to the Comfort Inn.

I checked into a non-smoking room which was unfortunatley on the same floor as smoking rooms. It reeked of stale smoke. They moved me to another floor which was slightly less offensive, but not much. Leaving the window open all the time was helpful, but cold.

The queen mattress had a depression so deep you had to climb out of it in the morning!

On the positive side, included was a discount coupon for a mediocre breakfast.

They should bulldoze this place and start over.

We had made reservations on line and the hotel website had clearly indicated free breakfast. However, when we checked in we were told that we would be given only a $5 complimentary coupon to be redeemed for breakfast (they misspelled complimentary as complementary on the coupon). As our son was only 10, the person that checked us in said that he would get a free breakfast. When we went to breakfast next morning, there was NO breakfast you could have for $5, unless all you wanted was either coffee, or some toast, not both. MOreover, when our bill came, our son was charged for his breakfast. When we complained to the dining staff, they said that it was NEVER the policy of the hotel to provide complimentary breakfast for anyone! After several phone calls and a long wait, the manager appeared, and vehemently denied that there was free breakfast. She indicated that what was to be provided was complimentary coupons for breakfast, not complimentary breakfast! Now any normal sane person reading an ad that said complimentary breakfast would understand that to mean free breakfast, and not just complimentary coupons for breakfast. Our friends who independently made reservation for the same hotel on line, and had breakfast with us was also under the impression that there was complimentary breakfast based on the internet ad. He even checked on the phone with the hotel when he had called a few days ahead to change the date of his check in. He was assured on the phone that yes, the breakfast was complimentary. Again, the manager denied that there was free breakfast, and said that he misunderstood - that it was only complimentary coupons for breakfast. This hotel's behavior is the worse of its kind in bait and switch, and this type of false advertising is clearly illegal, and should be brought to the attention of the State Attorney General's Office.

Moreover, we were told there is free wireless internet service. I suppose this is also a lie. We were unable to receive any internet signal whatsoever, but rather we got very nice strong signal from the Comfort Inn Hotel which is across the street. Comfort Inn advertised free internet service, and sure enough it is free!

Finally, the hotel is indeed old and tired, and the rooms dingy and drabby, and smell of mold. The pool is only a little larger than your bathtub, and the fitness room in the basement reeked of mildew and mold. All in all, it was a bad experience, and I would not recommend this hotel even if they had the last room in Eureka. You can do better for what they charge you elsewhere, like the hotel across the street.

After so many disappointments in trying to pick road hotels from reviews, we've taken to driving into town (off-season, so no availability problems) and actually looking at rooms before picking a place to stay. Though Eureka presented many options, the Red Lion appeared to be the only hotel with inside corridors - something my wife prefers.

We looked at a non-smoking king room, and though the hotel was a bit tired and unkempt, the room was reasonably clean. What was surprising was the price, which was way over that quoted in the AAA guide. When we asked about AAA rates, we were told there were none for that evening. Rather than driving onward, we checked in, and figured to take up the pricing with corporate when we got home. Imagine my surprise when the hotel's wireless Internet led me to the Red Lion home page where I was able to find a AAA rate room for about *less* than the AAA guide price. All in all we were paying about 50% more than the price quoted on the web.

Back at the front counter we were told that they could not find any AAA rate rooms on their computer, and that if we wanted to go back to our room and make a reservation, they could then cancel the charge for the room we just checked into. Another potential customer overheard this and then asked how she could also avail herself of AAA rates; she was instructed to use the computer in the lobby to make a reservation, then walk back to the check-in counter.

All of this would have been comical if the desk clerk showed any signs of understanding the irony, or had simply taken the opportunity to manually adjust the rates -- as she did for us after we decided we'd just continue on out to dinner and take up the rate snafu later. Instead, she seemed annoyed by the whole affair, perhaps a reflection of how many times a day she has to deal with Red Lion's predatory pricing policies.

After all that we found the hotel to be a fading 3-star, either understaffed in the cleaning department, or badly managed. The carpets needed vacuuming throughout the public area, and the hallways and elevators needed touchup on trim, paint and such. They appear to be refurbishing rooms on the third floor, as we had to take a roundabout two-elevator path to our rooms. The hotel is situated on a stretch of US 101 that has stoplights, hence if you're on the highway side of the hotel, you'll enjoy semis gearing up from a dead stop beginning early in the morning.

Next time we'll check out one of the two Best Westerns in town or the Day's Inns, or keep on driving to Arcata where there's a new, clean Holiday Inn Express. Assumedly these other establishments don't practice the sort of predatory pricing as does the Red Lion in Eugene - particularly pointless (and annoying) in the off-season when there was a lot of room inventory available to weary travellers.
