Maybe our expectations were too high, but for $200/night, we thought we'd get more than a basic hotel room that was barely acceptable. We found this place to be filled with a pretentious staff--a concierge was even required for ice. Very little was included in the price of the room. Even the nice welcome basket (in the room) came with its own price list. We stayed in the "queen room" on the 1st floor. The carpet was very old, matted and dirty. The fixtures in the bath were old and cheap. For this price point, there were no real conveniences in the room. No a/c, microwave, fridge (for example). I'm assuming this was yet another push toward their attached, overpriced restaurant (that we endured more than one solicitation for). They hung a couple of nice robes in the bathroom, and the towels were nice (again, pretentious). It was a beautiful old building, but our room was way overpriced and under-equipped. We obviously won't be staying here again.

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor and on the street... very noisy... and it was weather was quite warm. There is no a/c, so windows have to be open... not the best situation when concerned about safety and noise.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your response and we are sorry that your stay did not exceed your expectations. However, we have a few questions for you:
• Did you enjoy our complimentary wine hour with hors d’oeuvres?
• Did you participate in happy hour with $2.50 martinis and manhattans?
• Did you enjoy our complimentary cookies and tea?
• Did you enjoy our complimentary two-course breakfast with an individually prepared entrée?
• Did you think our towels were “pretentious” because there were too many or because we had two bath sheets also?
• Service or staff was “pretentious”? We did get ice for you so you didn’t have to. If there is anything a guest needs while staying here, we make sure it gets done for them. All you need to do is ask, so we can do it for you. This is service, and we don’t want our guests to have to do anything.
• Did you notice the items placed in the “honor basket” that include Schramsberg Champagne, Envy Sauvignon Blanc Wine, and a Cutrer Chardonnay as well as biscotti, smoked salmon, etched wine glasses, almonds, mixed nuts, books, overnight kit, and jelly beans? We call this an “honor basket” because the items are placed there for your enjoyment.
Yes, we are in the process of replacing all the carpeting which is included in the major renovation that includes paint, new furniture, new carpet, and a bathroom remodel. While there is new furniture and accessories in your room, there were a few steps left to do including the carpet and bathroom remodel.
All of our guests’ comments are very important to us as they help us to continually improve our guest's experience at Carter House Inns.
Best wishes,
Mark Carter

We just stayed in room 201 and loved our visit and the room. We used to live in Eureka for 20 years and this is our favorite place to stay and recommend to friends.

The Hotel is gorgeous and shows great detail in design and decor. We have known Mark Carter who built and owns the Carter House since our daughters played youth soccer and he is a very respected person. He has always been incredible at putting together staff, creating wines, making a comfortable fun ambience for dinners and much more.

Audrey and Jesse were remarkable staff members and very kind to us.

The new bar is a great addition.

The area around the Hotel has a lot to offer. We walked the short few blocks to a new fun bar Siren's Song and also to a great play at Redwood Curtain.

Eureka has an incredible history and offers many activities (arts, theater, zoo, music, redwood parks, restaurants) with few crowds. The ocean has miles of quiet beaches and incredible surf and sand dunes. There is phenomenal biking and walking trails are abundant. 45 miles inland are beautiful rivers for kayaking, rafting and swimming.

So glad a place like Carter House exist. We have had many incredible meals and wines here. Thanks Mark for creating this.

My husband and I took a trip down the coast with our dogs and stayed at the Carter House Inn. Callie was very helpful in booking our room.

Because of the dogs we had an adorable room on the ground floor of the Carter House across the street from the main hotel. At the front desk we were greeted by Jessie and he escorted us to the room. The rooms are decorated with antique furniture. The bed was very comfortable. And the bathroom was huge. So much better than staying in the typical hotel. We were each given a complimentary glass of wine.

We dined in the bar - full menu - as we arrived late and the dining room was closed. You must try the spinach artichoke popover. Delish! Dinner was great. And the following morning, we had the complimentary breakfast - eggs to order, potatoes, ham, and pastries. Excellent start to the day.

We would definitely stay here again. All of the staff was very friendly.

We made reservations several weeks ago for the Carter House Inns in Eureka CA. As we rolled into town on April 8, 2014 I was not impressed with the town. The hotel is located right on the edge of a questionable neighborhood, but the hotel, which is actually two buildings right across the street, still looked nice. We stayed in the same hotel the restaurant is located, and the staff was accomodating and the hotel nice. Our room was 201 in the turret like section overlooking the two cross streets of L and 3rd. We were only a block from the water, but it was extremely difficult to see, if at all, just a sliver, not like advertised. Other that the rooms facing the street, all other views stunk and I mean stunk. Our room was a suite which was really just a large room. Nice light. Other than the bed, the sofa was a hard bench with one chair-that is it. The TV was across from the bed, so not easily viewed from the setting area. The room, in this part of town was not worth 300.00. This is a hotel built in the 1980s to look old, so you would have thought the bathroom would have been large-no-only one sink and a jet tub in need of replacement. (aged yellow) The shower (in the tub) constantly went ice cold (7-8 times) durning a shower. Not sure why. The matress needed to be replaced. The edges were broken down.

Room Tip: Make sure the room over looks the street especially L & 3 or it is the back lot or ugly building views

Dear Ca Traveling,

Thank you for your review of Carter House Inns as we are always happy to hear how our guests felt about their experiences here. We take these comments to heart and try to improve areas that need improvement.

As you know, we are in a section of town very close to Eureka's Old Town. In the area where the Inn is located and within viewing distance, we have some impressive real estate including the Carson Mansion (the most photographed Victorian in the US today), The Adorni Center (Eureka's waterfront recreation center), and the Woodley Island Marina. Also close by and within two blocks of the Inn are the Eureka Public Library (three floors of books and audio visual materials) and the new Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center sponsored by Humboldt State University. You can see the view from Suite 201 by out the newly posted photo.

The issue with the shower has now been fixed and is running smoothly. Actually, the bathroom and the bedroom of that suite were just recently remodeled with new paint, new wainscoting and a Victorian pedestal sink as well as new lights and mirrors. The new furniture in the bedroom area came from Restoration Hardware and the Pottery Barn. Of course, there may be some other finishing touches in need of completion, and we thank you for mentioning them.

We appreciate your comments and suggestions and we look forward to your return. Thank you again for your review, and our best wishes to you in your travels.

Sincerely,

Mark Carter

We always stay here when visiting friends and sights in the area. We love the ambiance, the staff, and all the attention to detail. Everything is clean and well maintained, and it is within walking distance of the downtown. Great coffee and a fabulous breakfast is provided each morning, as well as a happy hour in the afternoon and fresh baked cookies later in the evening. There is always someone at the front desk ready to answer questions and provide anything else you need. You could not ask for more!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your vote of continuing appreciation for our Inn. Since you mentioned our breakfast, our coffee is roasted locally, and we try to use as many local products, produce, and sources as possible that are organic.

We are happy to see you again, as a returning guest is the best compliment of all.
