I am surprised by the negative reviews - I've stayed at Carter House twice and love the comfortable rooms, complimentary wine, cookies, and breakfast. Actually the breakfast is one of the top ten b&b breakfasts I've had. Excellent service. Stay here rather than Benbow Inn (in Garborville). Much better deal.

My wife and I recently spent a weekend in Eureka - picked this out of a list of Northern CA Bed & Breakfast inn's. The pictures of the Inn, its buildings and the rooms are impressive (but read on...).

Upon arriving, we checked into a 2nd floor "Very Nice Room" with a queen size bed in the main hotel. The elevator carpet was trashed and smelled of mold and mildew. The room was just OK, not very big with uninspiring decor. We looked at each other with disappointment.

No warmth, no coziness to it at all. And the lobby exhibited the same lack of ambiance. Just kind of commercial.

We asked if they had other rooms that were larger and nicer. They offered a suite across the street at the Carter House, a replica of an 1880 San Francisco Victorian home that is part of the cluster of 4 buildings that make up Carter Inns. We took it sight unseen.

Decorated in the stark style of the Victorian Age, after about 5 minutes, the novelty of the Carter House wore off and we once again found ourselves in an environment that just wasn't cozy (you know how you can walk into one B&B and it just screams cozy and another doesn't? The Carter Inns don't).

By the way, when they say there is "some stairs" involved - that is an understatement. Our "suite" being on the third floor of a Victorian home involved "substantial" stairs (no elevator).

And our "suite"? Hardly. It consisted of 2 bedrooms and a common hallway to a common bathroom, sparely furnished and by our guess, by an amateur decorator. All sheets, bedspreads, towels, curtains were stark white. All of them. Discount store picture frames. The cheapest toiletries one can buy (and they are always a tip-off as to the intent of the Inn-Keepers).

In the Carter House, no ice machine. Couldn't even chill a bottle of wine properly. Didn't call the front desk - they were across the street and appeared short-handed when we had checked in earlier - I just surmised that getting ice from them was going to be a Big deal - perhaps not.

Furnishings? Old antique chest of drawers, high boys, etc. that were chewed up, doors that wouldn't stay closed on them, or needed to be propped up to see the TV, etc. Some of them needed a real good polish and/or refinish job. The TV was the smallest digital TV one could buy. I could go on and on. Couldn't get ABC channel on the cable in either of the bedrooms.

Our suite had no comfortable sitting area. A suite it was not. To get to the kitchen, we had to go up and down a substantial flight of stairs (that's just to the 2nd floor). The main floor was all parlors and sitting room, but being 2 substantial floors above them, we were not interested in walking up and down any more than we had to, so we skipped the parlors and sitting rooms.

The windows were filthy. There were dust balls in the corners of our bedroom behind the doors. So thorough room cleaning is a foreign concept there.

Complimentary breakfast comes with each room at the main Hotel - we tried it one morning and it was OK. Did not partake of the evening free wine at Happy Hour, so have no comment on the quality of that aspect of the experience. Did not eat at their restaurant - the menu looked good but items were pricey.

The only positive that we took away is that the Carter Inns are downtown near the Harbor and the Old Town historical district of Eureka - so walking to restaurants, shopping, etc. was easy.

All in all - we were not impressed with this establishment and would never stay there again. One can do so much better. They need a professional decorator, a new decorating budget and need to rethink some of their business.

We checked into Carter House expecting the advertised $190 rate, and when the bill arrived the rate was reduced by about $30. If it still seems pricey, here's what came with the room: 2 glasses of special wine @$12 each and 2 breakfasts @ $16 each. The base cost of a great room in a 4 star hotel was about $100 a night. The staff was immensely helpful, the wine had character, and the breakfast was yummy and filling. I'd stay here again every time in town.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms are above the occasional street noise. Many restaurants in the old town are close...

We had a wonderful stay at the Carter House Inn and we would not hesitate to recommend their Inn to all who have an opportunity to visit this Northwest California location. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by an exceptional staff who were ready to care for all our needs. We were handed a glass of an excellent Cabernet Sauvigon from the Carter Cellars to welcome us after a long and stunningly gorgeous ride up Rt 101. The staff gave us their recommendations for places to visit (ask about the college cove.) During our stay we easily felt like the Inn was our very own home. One evening we made homemade sauce and lit a fire in the parlor of the main Victorian home. It felt like we were living in the home similar to the one in the movie "It's a wonderful life." To cap off our stay, each morning we had a delicious complimentary breakfast that included a different egg omelet, fresh fruit and breads. The omelet filled lyonnaise potatoes was awesome! Thanks for making us feel truly cared for. We hope to see you Jesse, Audrey, Dave, and Suzanna when we travel back through your neck of the redwood forests. And a special thank you to Mark Carter who provided my daughter and her husband with beautiful accommodations as they travel by bicycles on their 50 state tour for 2 charities.

We had been looking forward to traveling down the California coast so we could stay at the Carter House Inn because of it's five star rating. Upon our arrival there wasn't anyone to greet us, there were people in the lobby waiting for the complimentary evening wine and hors d' oeuvre and the only person that seemed available to ask where we could check- in was the bartender (who turned out to be very rude) said he wasn't on duty yet, and later when serving us our wine was even more rude. I told him I only wanted to know where we should check in, and then a young lady returned from somewhere and proceeded to check us in.

Our room had been up graded for some reason, I thought how nice, the room was very large and very worn, the bed squeaked, the bathroom was dirty and the whole room was dusty. This was a corner room and above the restaurant and very noisy not only from the restaurant patrons but from horrendous traffic.

The only good thing I can say about our experience at the Carter House Inn was the breakfast, it was very, very good. This place is so overpriced, and we were so disappointed. Never again.

Room Tip: Stay away from the front corner room for a quieter evening.

I would agree with many, the complimentary breakfast, wine, tea and cookies put this place a step above, but save your time and money and go where the locals go for dinner.

After a day of touring, along with 2 other couples, we had an 8 pm reservation for dinner. We waited 40 minutes before the wine was served. Okay, maybe the meal will be exceptional. Not! The 2-hour meal ended with one meal refused (very rare and cold), another one not cooked as requested (salmon, too raw in middle), and another was extremely undercooked (scallops which were not even opaque). It was the Chef 's choice how your food was cooked, rare or med rare. That is simply chef snobbery. When paying $45 and up for each meal, plus a $50 bottle of wine, I expect the meal to be cooked to the customers desire. The waiter wasn't too concerned, because he automatically got a 20% gratuity for 6 patrons/table. Live and learn.

Place looks nice from outside, interior is nice. I found the rooms average and noisy.
The man checking us in followed us to the room, we found luggage inside, down to get a room, I'll discount you for your smaller and different room he told us, no discount given on check out.
Breakfast not impressive, you ask for an espresso, you get a cappucino, finally the girl shows upp with a regular coffe.
Just because you put thousands of bortles of wine in a cellar doesn't meann you are a good place.
This place have a high ambition but have a way to go.
