Abigail’s Bed and Breakfast is more than any other B & B we’ve known – it’s a tourist attraction, a living museum in which you actually can experience the Victorian past. The beautiful and stylish Victorian elegance blew us away from the moment we saw the house and entered the door. The extensive research of the owners, Doug and Lily Vieyra, and their impeccable attention to detail and authenticity in recreating this masterpiece is evident everywhere. There are no cute Teddy Bears or curtains with frills to distract, but very mature and rich interior decorating and furniture from earlier days to pique one’s interest and please. The library is full of great and interesting books to read and a diverse collection of music tapes and radio programs from that era to listen to in a comfortable sitting room that makes for a truly relaxing evening when you return from dinner. In the morning a superior and appetizing breakfast of fresh and original creations is available, but equally if not more important is the opportunity to spend time with these genuinely personable “docents” who are boundlessly hospitable and accommodating. They will put aside their chores, take you around the house and grounds, and spin amusing and captivating stories about its history and the area. When you finally have to move on, you feel you have done more than just had a pleasant visit between stops – you’ve made some new and warm friends. That’s the epitome of recreating the Victorian experience that enriched our stay most. We couldn’t recommend a better place to stay when in Eureka, but when you do, put aside a little extra time there to enjoy and savor the beauty of this bygone era at Abigail’s.

We spent Memorial Day weekend in Eureka and spent two nights at Abigail's which is a national landmark. The house is a beautiful large Victorian with four bedrooms, three parlors, a dining room, a library, many bathrooms, a sauna, a garden, and numerous other rooms. The entire thing is so authentically decorated, it's like stepping back in time. The innkeepers (Lily and Doug) live on the premises and are incredibly friendly, and also very helpful. They recommended great restaurants, made restaurant reservations for us, gave us ideas of things to do, and told us interesting anecdotes about the area.
My husband and I had the Lily Langtry room (she actually stayed in the house at one time!) and our friends had the Van Gogh room. The Lily Langtry seemed brighter, but the Van Gogh had an adorable little reading nook. Both were very comfortable, clean and authentically decorated.
We didn't have breakfast there but it smelled good! We were out most of the day, but in the evenings, you can recline in the comfy leather armchairs and sofas and watch movies from Lily and Doug's incredibly huge and well-organized collection of movies ranging from the 1910's to the 1950's or 60's. Or you can play board games in the library, or read one of the fascinating Victorian catalogues or books that are lying just everywhere! Lily set out tea for us one evening when we came home tired, and we sipped it out of delicate china in the Chinese parlor which was fun.
The sauna was great too, and there's a shower right next to it.
Even with eight people in the house, it felt huge, and you never felt like you were tripping over anyone. Lily and Doug give you a key so you can come and go as you please.
This is probably the best b+b I've ever stayed in, and it made our trip to northern northern California a much richer experience than it would have been otherwise. Every touch was friendly and welcoming, down to the plethora of towels and soaps in the bathrooms and the Ferrero Rocher chocolates that are placed in your bedroom every morning! We would love to go again!

Things to do around Eureka:
-Have oysters and beer at the Lost Coast Brewery.
-Have good seafood at Sea Grill and enjoy their fantastic salad bar.
-Have a meal at Restaurant 301 which is expensive and a little snooty but worth every penny.
-Take a picture in front of the Carson Mansion.
-Go up north and see really big redwoods and a giant Paul Bunyan and Babe at Trees of Mystery.
-Check out photos at Samoan Cookhouse but have breakfast on the patio at the Marina Cafe.
-On Memorial Day weekend, go to the Kinetic Sculpture Race.
-Buy cheese in Loleta.
-Have a malt shake in Ferndale.

After staying at more than one hundred bed and breakfasts Inns, both here and in Europe, we must confess that our three days lodging at Abigail's Elegant Victorian Mansion has been the high-light of all our B&B experiences. We cannot recommend them highly enough as their merit deserves. It is now the hallmark from which we now measure all others. - Romon Navarro and Francis X Bushman
