“Just what we wanted”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2012

We stayed at Abigail's for two nights on a birthday/vacation trip to northern California October 8-9. We only wish we could have had a whole week to explore the premises and surrounding area. Abigail's is a treasure, located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Our hosts, Lily and Doug, were extremely interesting and informative. We were treated more as friends than as guests. The house is amazing, filled with history and antiques - it was like stepping back in time. The location is very convenient for exploring Eureka, Redwoods National Park, the Lost Coast and Humboldt Redwoods State Park. There is so much to do that our two days went by in a flash. Doug and Lily were great hosts and provided an insider's perspective on the local sites and restaurants. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip to Eureka.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Governor's room which had an attached bath - very nice.

One of the things that we delight in sharing with our guests, especially those from outside the Northern California Coastal area, is the variety and splendor of the North Coast’s majestic outdoor wonders. Everything from the world-famous Giant Redwood trees, to the spectacular coastline of the Pacific Ocean, to white-water rafting, to horse-back riding on Ocean beaches. Then there is Zip Lining and Gondola rides in the canopy of the towering Redwoods. And many, many more outdoor adventures, such as exploring our National Wildlife Refuge.
However, not to be over-looked, Eureka’s cultural aspects are both rich and deep, enjoying all of the fine arts, from opera and ballet, to concert and chamber orchestrations. Both Eureka’s ‘Blues-by-the-Bay” and “Jazz Festival”, as well as our famous ‘Banana Slug Races’, are major cultural events the both enrichen and celebrate our appreciation of life on this remote coast of Northern California.
Sadly, travelers just passing through, miss many of these wonderful opportunities. However, the visitor who stays for more than a day or two, can very often be lucky enough to ‘Stop and Smell the Roses’, thereby enriching and rewarding their time in Eureka and the surrounding area.
And your innkeepers will be delighted to help you discover all that the region has to offer. Just ask how we can help. We are here to serve you in anyway we can. - Doug & Lily Vieyra, Owners / InnKeepers.

My Husband and I stayed in this B&B for one night only but we had a wonderful time.
Owners were very welcoming, always open to have a little chat.
The whole mansion is decorated with taste and pride. It is the first time we slept in a real victorian and victorian decorated house.
I strongly recommand this place.

It is always a pleasure to expose those who are interested in Victoriana, to a “Class Room” of great interest and fun. Because we follow the 1890’s interior decorating philosophy of “Too much – is not enough”, our Inn’s interiors are filled with an enrichment of art and culture from around the world, circa 1890. It is a visual song of joy and jubilation, from floor to ceiling, meant to give the weary traveler much more than “just a comfortable place to sleep”. Ofcourse our Victorian atmosphere is not for everyone –“ too busy, too much clutter” is what an advocate of Danish Modern would say. For those we would recommend the Carter House Victorians. But if one has an interest in history, and the cultural past of 1890’s America, then one would enjoy a little bit of Victorian fun at our 1878 National Historic Landmark inn. Here you will be warmly welcomed. - Doug & Lily Vieyra, Owners & InnKeepers

Amazing house & decor. You need to allow an hour or two each evening just to enjoy the antiques, art, etc. "Clutter" to the max in a very interesting way. Lots & lots to look at, and plenty of interesting books & magazines too. Allow time to sit & read & look up at the room around you, then move to another parlor and do the same. Room was also very nicely decorated, not as magnificently overdone as the parlors but that allows you to relax a bit more in the room while still enjoying the beautiful decor. Street along side is somewhat busy. This wasn't a problem in our back room but it might be for some in the other two rooms. Pretty quite for about 6 hours during the night. Basic cleaning had been done but some things were missed, hence the 4 instead of 5 star rating. I expect the innkeepers will have taken care of that by now. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. This historic house and interesting collections should be experienced. Innkeepers are very nice and informative.

Our reviewer is quiet right in noting that one of our rooms faces the street and that it can be an occasional issue for a light sleeper. If this is an issue for the traveler we hope that it is mentioned at time of reservation so that we can make a more suitable recommendation, either another of our rooms or another lodging establishment. Unfortunately there are few lodging establishments that are not within ear-shot of a busy roadway. The Hotel Carter is the only one that comes to mind, and it has good TripAdvisor reviews.
The other comment that the reviewer makes about "Basic cleaning had been done but some things were missed," is also quite true. With all the "nooks and crannies" that are found in a large Victorian home, it is a daunting task to make a 100% "Spic & Span" , "squeaky clean" environment. It is for this reason we go out of our way to ask for guest feed-back on how we might do a better job. And that is why I am grateful for this TripAdvisor Reviewer comments. My wife Lily and I genuinely appreciate such helpful comments - comments that will enable us to do a better job of serving our guests.

Beautiful house with a surplus of antiques in pretty Eureka. Host and hostess are very kind and have taken great pains to make the home as Victorian as possible. We stayed two nights, which wasn't enough. Depending on your budget/timeline/interests, I would stay longer next time. Very nice and relaxing space and adorable town. House has lovely garden as well!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that isn't facing the street. Ours had a wee bit of traffic noise.

We are delighted to hear that our guests thought well enough of us to say that they would like to have stayed even longer. We thank them greatly for their kind comments. Our park-like garden is indeed a quiet island of tranquility in a world fill with noises of all kinds - birds, wind in the trees, and the gentle humm of nature. Eureka, historic in character, is steeped in the life and times of a late 1800's Victorian Seaport. Both Eureka and our 1878 National Historic Landmark inn offer a welcome respite from a long day's journey.

After too many hours of driving from Lassen National Park, it was such a pleasure to arrive at Doug and Lily's special home in Eureka. Entering their home is a treat for the eyes! Doug escorted us to a comfortable room and provided helpful information regarding our dinner options. He also knew about the terrain that we had just encountered. We were very pleased with our stay there and will certainly return if we find ourselves in the area.

Room Tip: We had two quiet nights in the Governor's Room.

Service to our guests begins way before they arrive at our Inn. When making reservations on the phone, we ask about their route in order to provide insight into what they may want to be aware of on their journey, particularly highlights and points of interest ("Avenue of the Giants", for example). At the moment we would alert them to the all-pervasive smoke that fills the air in Shasta, Trinity and Eastern Humboldt Counties, due to several large forest fires; and to possible delays due to fire-fighting in the National Forests. For this reason, (in this instance) all things being equal, we would recommend taking Hiway 101 rather than Hiway 299. Fortunately for our North Caroline guests all worked out well, even with an unexpected late arrival. By calling us before our 6 PM close of check-in, we were alerted to the fact that circumstance would cause our guest to be late and we could then make adjustments on our end, as well as offer suggestions to help them mitigate problems of roads, routing and other impediments to their safe arrival . Our hope is to add enrichment to their travel, before, during and after their stay with us.

We decide Eureka would be a great place to stay for a night on a long road trip before heading south down to Yosemite for a few days. The hotels and motels in the area seemed like boring choices so when Abigail's popped up here and had great reviews we jumped on the opportunity. After camping for a few days, it was so pleasant to be welcomed into this gorgeous home. Lily gave us great recommendations of things to do in the area for the one night we were there and provided us with maps and menus. We had an amazing dinner nearby at a brick over pizza place she recommended and then went downtown for a few drinks. The room we stayed in had a nice bathroom which was perfect since it'd be our last real shower for a few days. The house was decorative and awe inspiring. We live in an old Victorian home in Boston but had never stepped foot in any "authentic" Victorian style homes. If we head out west again, we might have to stop in Eureka for another stay. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Governor's room was quiet, private and very comfortable.

We are happy to offer our Victorian Mansion as an alternative to "boring choices", and are proud that we provide quite a bit more than just a place to sleep. And too, knowing our area intimately, we work especially hard at providing our guests with a highly focused selection of places to visit in our area, based on their interests. Although a functioning as the largest Seaport on California's North Coast, and while boasting the freshest fish in California, Eureka is also noted for having a significant number of resturants that serve creative cuisine from around the world. This reviewer enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the nearby "Brick & Fire Bistro", located at 1630 F Street. TripAdvisor reviewers have rated this eatery as being #1 in Eureka.

This place was amazing, history stood still in this mansion, thanks to Innkeepers and owners Doug and Lily.
The rooms are private and comfortable, there's no breakfast, but they are many options for food in Eureka. They keep menus and brochures for many of the restaurants and attractions in the area.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Governor's room, it is the only one with a private bath, the other rooms share...

Both Lily and I are extremely happy to enjoy the many fine people who arrive as "guests" and leave as "friends". It is an honor and a joy for us to be able to meet so many wonderful people and share our historic Victorian House-Museum with them. Over the years we have made many adjustments to respond to evolving trends of the traveler. One was to offer the traditional "Bed and Breakfast" with the expected breakfast (at our normal room rate price). The other was to offer a stay at our 1878 National Historic Landmark without the breakfast - at a significantly reduced rate ($50 off), for the busy traveler who was in a hurry to "get on the road", or who normally did without breakfast at home, or who just wanted to save $50. When we discovered that 90% of our guests preferred to skip breakfast and take advantage of the $50 reduction in room rate, we decided to follow their lead, and stopped serving breakfast. The other change we made was to reduce the number of bedrooms (we have five) we made available for occupancy, in order to better give focus on fewer guests. Hence what once was a "two rooms share a bathroom" situation, evolved into a single room being available, with a detached PRIVATE BATH. The guest then was able to select which of the two rooms they wanted. The remaining room we do not rent, unless it is requested by the guest, as they have four people in their party and need both rooms. This has worked out very well.
I must confess, that we are not primarily a "lodging establishment", but rather let our historic home be a "classroom" for those who share our own passion for the opulence, grace and grandeur of the Victorian era of the 1890's. Because it is not about $$$ & Cents for us, but rather, it is about meeting enriching and fun people from outside our "Redwood Curtain". It is they who enrichen and brighten up our own lives. And for that, we are forever greatful !
