First, it was actually sort of tough to find the house on a rainy dark day, there wasn’t a big sign, just a tiny one, had to pull out the phone and check the photo. Upon checking in at 4 p.m., the host spent several minutes with me discussing some options for a drive before dinner.

My suite, the Trillium, turned out to be the entire upper floor of the old house. Lots of room and with the kitchenette it would make a nice place to stay for an extended visit. The interior styling is very nicely done with nicely selected vintage decorations. The bed and shower worked well and the room was very quiet. Some folks might like additional curtains in both the bathroom and at the doorway to the stairs, some wouldn’t care.

There were no other guests during my stay and no options like a common room or group dining area but the Hydrangea doesn’t say that it was a B&B, so it isn’t.

I do have a word of CAUTION! Don’t go blindly reaching into the morning breakfast basket after hauling it to the room! I knew there was something warm inside but my brain didn’t register that it might be a stonking-hot iron skillet in the basket! Ouch. The apple upside-down pancake DID taste great and the smoked ham and fruit bowl all worked well, couldn’t finish it all.

I recommend the Hydrangea Inn if you’re looking for something slightly different for a place to stay, just don’t expect a regular B&B experience. Please, be sure to check to see if there are hot pads on top of the breakfast basket; that MIGHT be a hint (didn’t work for me) that there’s something really hot inside.

Thanks for taking the time to inform guests of your quiet, comfortable stay, pointing out how we are different from B&B's. We are kind of an interloper of the industry and we hope ahead of the travel wave. The warmness of a guest house or B&B, privacy of an inn.but completeness of vacation rental by owner. Our guests have responded well and we believe we are on the right path. It is just there is no real designation options from review and booking sites other than B&B or Inn. Hopefully they will add Guest House as they do in Europe.

The actual B&B and gardens are incredibly lovely. We had the suite on the top floor which was large and comfortable with an office area, bedroom, living room and small kitchen. The bathroom was large and pretty nice for an older residence.

However, when we arrived early there was no one there to greet us and they held to their strict 4:00 check in time. Since this was a new area to us we had no idea where to go for coffee or shopping or anything to kill time until the required check-in time. Once we were allowed to check in it was difficult to get the owner to understand we were tired and did not want to drive far or have a heavy meal, although she finally gave us a good dinner recommendation and made reservations for us.

Breakfast was strictly at 8:30 not a minute before. There was a French Press in the kitchen for coffee for us to make but only enough for 2 cups and no refills available. Breakfast was fruit and a very tasty quiche with one yogurt for 2 people. It was left downstairs in a basket for us to carry upstairs to our room.

Although this was an incredibly beautiful B&B the lack of warmth from the owner and the fact that the place was empty for most of our stay just ruined the experience. There was not coffee an cookies in the afternoon or any type of evening get together with other guests but to be fair I don't think there were other guests. Still, all the downstairs rooms were locked giving the feeling of being shut out. I would not stay here again for all those reasons.

Room tip: Don't expect typical B&B hospitality.

Thanks for your review and 5 stars with the chance to address our uniqueness from B&B's. Hydrangea Inn is a boutique inn with each guest getting their own complete apartment or "tiny house" with a living room, bedroom and fully outfitted kitchen, We do not have common rooms. Guests do at times gather casually without a schedule before or after dinner in the backyard in the beautiful gardens around the rock wood burning fireplace under the soft yard lights. We bring wine or games most of the time.. Some guests gather in their places as they would like.

We serve a complimentary hot breakfast to your door at 8:30 or 9am. Not a true B&B where guests gather in a common living room and eat in a common room. We do provide for an early breakfast with delivery the night before of fresh fruit with yogurt topping and homemade granola and milk to go or stay, . We provide enough coffee for 95% of the guests with our French press, but those wanting more just need to ask.

The staff is a small group of three doing it all for our high ratings. Check in is 4 to 6pm, so we can get everything done for guests during the day. We inform on the confirmation check in, early or late, can be arranged for; if we are notified ahead of time. If we are here, not running errands, check in can happen on a drop in basis. The sign on the front door says check in is 4-6pm so guests will know for sure when we will be here.

Hydrangea Inn is a hidden gem and Rene is a super host! We loved the suite and the quality of the bed and bed linen gave us the best nights sleep of our trip. The breakfast was truly delicious and the local information was better than anything we could find on line!

So glad you enjoyed your stay, as well as my "little talk" on what to see and do in Humboldt County. I worry I over do it sometimes on the sites of the Northcoast.

Stayed here after dropping off son at college, and such a respite it was! Everything was beautifully done and taken care of, every detail of care and ease of use was evident, and the breakfast provided in the morning was amazing! My husband and I are still talking about our lovely stay, thank you Renee and Hydrangea Inn!!!

We were very pleased with our stay at the Hydrangea Inn. It was cute, clean and cozy. Renee is a nice person and a good cook. The apple soufflé pancake was delicious. We would definitely stay there again.
