Welk Resort San Diego
Ranked #1 of 16 Hotels in Escondido
Reviewed August 3, 2010

This was our second stay at the Welk Resort, a timeshare trade through RCI.

Pros:
--Modern, spacious rooms.
--Beautiful mountainous surroundings
--Two golf courses on the premises (a 9-hole and an "executive"--short--18-hole)
--Free wireless internet

Cons:
--Distance from the city of San Diego (45 minutes)
--Staff can get flustered

Other things to consider:
--Mix of older (75+) and younger ( under 10) crowd. Few teenagers with their parents.
--Nice pool, but not much going on at the resort
--If Debbie Reynolds and Juliet Prowse are your idea of great entertainment, this place is for you.

We stayed at the resort for 2 nights with our 14-year old and 8-year old grandkids. As others have experienced, we had many problems while there beginning with rude concierge personnel, TV issues (cable down and remote control with no battery), jacuzzi jets that didn't work for several hours, miscommunication about how to get more pool towels, room keys that continued to fail, scheduled activities that ended before printed time, a sofa bed that needed to be replaced years ago, and unprofessional help at the Front Desk from a young manager who really didn't seem to care. In spite of all these inconveniences and rude reception, we enjoyed our stay. Our 8-year old thoroughly enjoyed the pools with slides and the craft activities, and the game rooms have enough amenities to keep teenagers happy. We found the restaurant food acceptable and not overpriced, although if I were to go again, I'd definitely bring more food to cook ourselves. Since we were only there 2 nights, we didn't want to drive somewhere else for groceries or restaurants. It would be nice to have a poolside place to eat at more than one pool. It would be helpful if they would limit the number of day guests on the weekend as the pools do get very busy. But the biggest complaint we have is the lack of professional behavior of several of the front desk and concierge staff as well as a complete lack of communication between departments (front desk to maintenance, front desk to housekeeping).

We were VERY pleasantly surprised with the high quality of the Welk resort. We were one of the last people to check in (9pm) but,per my advance request, they held a beautiful fireplace/jacuzzi suite in Torrey Pines for us.What a view! What a balcony! The air was fresh and clean, and the weather was superb each day.Not too cool, not too hot, because of the location in the mountains. The Welk has a very generous HOA (yes,it's a timeshare) that demands attention to detail and outdoes almost every other resort that we have stayed at while "time-sharing". The firepit near the Torrey Pines area actually comes on automatically. This creates a nice, social atmosphere, attracting neighbors to sit together and chat, roast smores or just relax.ALL of the touches at the Welk are first class.
The ONLY gripe that I had was the location. The Welk is just off of Interstate 15,north of San Diego. The freeway noise is a constant. It's not oppressive, but it is always present. Once inside the unit, close the sliding glass doors, and the noise disappears.
Visit the Welk museum. It's free. The theater is a blast. We went to see the doo wop group,The Alleycats.Great time!
We DO plan to return, staying for TWO weeks the next time.We loved it that much!

Be warned! The Welk resort is presently expanding and selling a new phase of their mountain villas. As with all timeshares, sales staff will misrepresent the facts, characterizing a timeshare purchase as "an investment" etc...
We attended the sales presentation. You can just say no when you check in if you do not wish to endure it. The sales rep that was assigned to us did characterize the timeshare purchase as an "investment". We were also told that Welk resort has retained the first right of refusal for all re-sales...and was exercising that right,re-purchasing timeshare re-sales from the secondary market at roughly 85% of retail value, thus supporting the price and justifying it for the buyers on their sales floor. We did not buy BUT we did go directly to the e-bay marketplace to attempt to buy a re-sale.We found a 240,000 platinum point re-sale package on e-bay...and bid on it after speaking with the broker offerring the re-sale.He told us that Welk WAS NOT exercising their right of first refusal...In fact,no one is anymore,Marriott included, because the economy is so poor. Thus,we bid and nearly became owners(we were outbid) for roughly one thirtieth of the price that was given to us earlier in the day...on the Welk sales floor.

We traded points for a week July 17- 24,2010. Room on arrival was ready but when opening sheets on bed, hairs, blood spot on pillows ,toilet seat and toilet area dirty or not cleaned. Took forever to clean. Parking in the villas another story ,the resort has day passes and as a night guest good luck in finding a place. Next day keys did not work again a wait and we found they have a problem with locks and are changing them in August, Tours are cancelled at last minute , ours to La was . Computers are limited to 30 minutes ,which is fair but they freeze up and printers don,t work. Lastly when signing in they start with their time share approach. Beware its another boiler room operation.
However the outside grounds are nice and well kept. Pool is not really supervised and balls are passed and noisy with day passers. Owners we meet their from other Welk timeshares were highly disapointed. Restaurant is average. Grocery store is a laugh.

We are writing this review during our stay at the Welk resort, Escondido. We would agree with previous comments, both good and bad.

The resort has good facilities and is well maintained for the most part. There are loads of activities including a theatre which has passable shows for reasonable prices. The restaurant and pizza take away are just ok and not too expensive but the convenience store/deli is very poor. The location of the resort is terrible – miles from anywhere. Like others we booked thinking it would be a good base to explore San Diego city but we are over 40 miles away. It is partly our own fault for booking without checking this out completely, but we assumed that San Diego meant close to the city. A hire car is essential but parking can be a problem at times

The standard of the apartments is all to do with the rental basis. We exchanged through Interval International, which means that we are allocated a developer unit, which is the least attractive category of unit. Welk releases units to Interval so that exchange occupants can be targeted with a timeshare sales pitch. It is not about providing good accommodation, but the flaw is that having been allocated the least attractive accommodation they then try to talk you into buying a timeshare from them. We thaought that staying two weeks would mean that we would have a better chance of a good apartment, but a two week stay means less customers for Welk to bombard with a sales pitch so this is not a strong negotiating point.

On check in our unit was described as having a “balcony overlooking the golf course”, but it is below ground level and the patio looks straight into a retaining wall. When we requested a change the duty manager asked if we were with Interval International and when we said yes, she said there was nothing she could do for us. She said she would contact us again in three days but one week later we are still waiting. For customer care at Welk read ignore!

Our apartment is reasonably comfortable but very dark as the sun does not get into it. It could benefit from a refurbishment and a new carpet but is reasonable otherwise. The radio has no reception, probably because it is a basement unit. We did get a one bedroom apartment as booked so Interval will not help us with a better location – after all they have got their exchange fee so are happy. Free internet access is provided.

Cleaning etc is ok. Any problems such as faulty equipment have been sorted quickly and efficiently. Regarding noise from adjoining apartments – I agree!! You would think the family next door were in the same room.

Overall it is possible to have a good holiday here if you accept the shortcomings.

For the love of God, avoid this sleazy, unethical company like the plague! Like others, we were roped into doing a 90 min presentation for free hockey tickets (which they told us were in 200 section & you get tickets right after presentation) and free 4 day San Fran getaway.

After 3+ hours (the 'presenter" was swearing, totally unprofessional, etc) they bring us downstairs to "claim the prize"....sit through another presentation for their "audition package" ($1k), which for what they presented it as, actually sounded like a good deal (free trips to hawaii, all inclusives etc)....and since we had up to 1 week to refund it, we signed on.

Soooo. No hockey tickets- rather a "voucher" which you have to go all the way to staples center to claim (300's nosebleed section) and pray that they even have any available (uuh, just a minor little detail they don't tell you!)...

In a nutshell, after reading all the complaints against Holiday Travel, we cancelled the package. The "manager" wanted to "make it right" and got us hockey tickets and a free 4 day stay at their resort...yet I've been unable to claim that. I've been trying for over one month now to get my comp stay and he and his completely useless assistant won't get back to me.

So, got no San Fran getaway...got no comp LW stay...just a big waste of time, gas and lots of frustration. Yes, will be telling everyone & their mother to STAY AWAY FROM LAWRENCE WELK. All they do is push their timeshare.

They have ZERO ethics, ZERO customer service, and ZERO integrity!

You've been warned!! We live in So. Cal. and every single one of our friends who have ever done the LW thing got screwed. At least when we did Marriott (which we were actually interested in, as it's near the beach, not right off a freeway offramp in Escondido!), they were professional and didn't cuss or lie or do bait & switch.
