“The Welk Resort is place that has something for everyone.”
Reviewed March 9, 2013 via mobile

The Welk Resort is a great place to visit for a few days or a week stay. There are plenty of things to do and San Diego, Oceanside or Carlsbad are about a half hour away. The rooms are very nice. D. Castle

This was a gift from my wife's parents, and we have used it annually for several years. It's a 2BR Resort Villa, and as many timeshares as we've traded to using our other timeshare, this is the best overall facility for on-property activities and facilities. Resort villas are capacious, plus a sofa bed in the living room. The living room TV is only a 36" flat panel with bad sound, and they haven't sprung for connectivity between the TV and the stereo system. Four different pools and recreation centers, golf courses (we're not golfers), theater, shopping, restaurant, walking, and programs (some with a fee). And bus tours. You pretty much need a car to get around, even to the other rec centers. The adults-only pool and rec center gets good marks when we don't have kids along. All kinds of interesting restaurants are available in Escondido and San Marcos, and we particularly like Golden Egg Omelet House and India Princess, but there are lots of other choices and even more toward the coast, such as El Norte in Carlsbad. Theater shows are strong, although South Pacific was not up to the usual standard with the notable exceptions of Emile, Cable, and Billis. We have studiously avoided presentations, and don't even answer the house phone, since it's going to be either housekeeping or a lure to a presentation. Cell and wifi work fine. Ours is a lower unit, and if there are kids upstairs, it sounds like tap dancing classes. The undercurrent of interstate noise is constant, but distant, so not bad for older ears. Great staff, responsive to our questions and maintenance calls, but check-in will give you a fore-taste of the sales pitch as they refer you over to the "concierge" to get your parking pass. We would buy an adjoining week (only in the extensive secondary market) for retirement stays.

Room Tip: If you have to sit through a presentation, take out your cell phone, lay it on the desk, and say you...

We are owners and are very pleased with the resort, they are always updated and adding to it. We love to golf there and have friends over! The rooms are quiet and they 2 bedrooms are very large. The property are are very well taken are up and is a great place for couples and families of any age!

We are looking forward to our next visit.

This is a timeshare resort. We booked this trip through Interval International, a timeshare exchange company. We stayed in a one bedroom unit with a full kitchen. The until was very clean and the grounds were immaculate. The property has three different pool areas, two of which have water slides, and one has a water park. It is a wonderful family resort! They offer a tour/timeshare sales pitch, but you are not obligated to attend or buy. This will definitely be our "go-to" spot in the San Diego area.

We returned to this resort after having an excellent stay there last year. We understand that the mountain villas in which we spent the week are more updated than some of the other units. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The only disadvantage we had was the lack of an elevator and we were on the 2nd floor. Last year we had a first floor villa and it was easier to transfer luggage.

Room Tip: Select the mountain villas

Overall, a very enjoyable stay at the Welk Resorts. Below are some thoughts on the various aspects of the property:

Rooms - we stayed in a 2BR villa overlooking the lake and the room is huge...large living area in between two spacious bedrooms each with large master baths. The decor in the room is very dated (tube TVs, couches were old and saggy) but the beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms looked more recently updated. Kitchen was well stocked with accessories but could have used a cutting board.

Staff/Amenities - the staff we dealt with were all very friendly and professional. The pool at the Mountain Villas area is top nocth...beautiful setting in the canyon, well heated and a ton of seating. My children had a great time at the splash pad. We didn't use the theather, restaurant or shops so can't comment there. A couple of minor gripes: 1) trash dumpsters are very sparse throughout the property...we had to drive to get to one which was very inconvenient. 2) the resort does not offer cribs or pack and plays so we had to rent one for the week from a local baby supply website. This is the first resort we have ever stayed at that didn't offer this service and it cost us $$$ out of our pocket.

Location - a good 30-40 from popular SD area attractions (zoo, legoland, seaworld) but the setting in the valley is very picturesque and it was kind of nice to be off the beaten path. Of course, this led to spending more on gas but we got to see towns such as Vista, Escondido and San marcos that we would not have seen if we stayed closed to the SD Metro area.

One other great service I wanted to mention was timesharegrocery.com. They service the Welk Resorts...you go online the day before you arrive and place your grocery order. When you arrive at your villa, you find your order put away in the fridge and cupboards. Great, convenient service at a reasonable service charge ($19.95).

Room Tip: Ask for a 2nd floor room as there is quite a bit of noise from above in lower levels.

On arrival we were welcomed by a very friendly attendant. The resort has lots of places to relax and the grounds are nice. Having adult only pools and recreation facilities apart from those for families with kids is a bonus. The spacious accommodations were dated and there were some ants parading on the kitchen counter. There is a restaurant on site, although I can't recommend it (that is another review) as well as a small shopping area and theatre. If you are following GPS, fill up before you get there because the service station on site is no longer open. They like to get you to take the timeshare presentation and will offer some gifts to do so. We went and found our agent, Claudia, to be very friendly and not pushy. I would have given it a better rating but for the ants, bags of laundry left on the sidewalks for hours, fences blocking much shorter routes to various areas and the less than stellar restaurant. They have a security gate into the villa area but there is also a back way in with no security.

Room Tip: If you can't do stairs, be sure to ask for ground floor. Try to get the more recently construct...
