“Very nice, relaxing weekend”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

This is either my 3rd or 4th Welk Review (obviously we like the place because we keep returning).

We stayed at the Welk over the holiday weekend. The first two nights were in the mountain villas (3835) and the third night was in the resort villas (the original ones; Gigi 195). Both were great. We had friends meet us for the third night and they seemed to enjoy the resort as well.

The resort villas have been updated -- bathrooms look great now, and the the kitchen counters are awesome. The wallpaper is the same (i think), as are the kitchen lights, table, and chairs. The room does look updated though.

There was a slight mishap with our reservations on the day of check-in, but the staff was very nice (although a bit frazzled and busy) and we got everything sorted out. Just took a little while but it wasn't a problem.

Room Tip: We were in the Teton Building in Mountain; Gigi for Resort Villas. Teton is nice and the balcony ove...

My parents bought a timeshare in the original Villas on Harmony Hill in 1990 so their family could come stay for fun, family times. We at first thought how great can it be?Well, their duplex villa is the size of a home with a large kitchen and a master bedroom with a king size bed and another bedroom with 2 double beds. It has a large living room and is situated on a golf course. The bathrooms are very large. The timeshare was passed on to my sister and myself after my parents passed on. Now four generatioons of our family have come here. My son, his wife and twins came for several days and my daughter and her husband came for a couple of days. They now have 5 rec centers with ping pong tables, pool tables, computers, water slides, kid pools and activities to take part in. They have a Farmers Market on Mon. nite. It is conveniently located near San Diego and you can easily drive to Orange County or L.A. It is also located not far from Pala Casino and Valley View Casino. They only have a convenience store and they do have the Canyon Grille that has daily specials in the small bar. We find it a very relaxing place to rest and visit with family. Just don't go to the time share presentation. My daughter never got her free trip and they are very rude when you don't buy one. You can buy timeshares cheaper online. There were issues about the inventory because they didn't have a checklist as they did before. They were good about bringing the things out but they should have the staff check to make sure everything is there. The checkout time of 10:00 is too early. They need to go back to having more cleaning staff again.

Room Tip: Don't choose newer villas. They aren't as spacious as those on Broadway Hill, Harmony Hill...

My disappointment started when I waited in line for over 40 mins to register after driving 6 hrs from Northern,CA. Then I had to go to another line for owners so they can bribe you (5 pizzas or $50. rest/theater discount) to sit through a time-share spiel. I remember saying No, thank you several times. Pushy/Rude mother/daughter team, did not listen. The villas used to be well appointed, this time, no towels, bath or pool. The kitchen was sad :( pots w/lids that did not fit. 5 salad forks, 3 dinner forks. All of the plates, dishes and etc. were all off count. @9pm call'd housekeeping again, asked for a set of sheets, it did not arrive until after midnight. Then on the last day of my stay, the cleaning crew came knocking on my door @ 9:30am, check-out is @ 10am. Very disappointed.

On arrival room wasn't ready, when we finally got the key went to the room and the maid hadn't started waited an hour but still no progress. Went back to reception and after some time got allocated a new room. The new room was dirty and most of the appliances had seen better days, about 30 years ago! Only 4 plates for six people and all the other cups, glasses and flatware there were only 6 of each and no spares which wouldn't be too bad if it was not for the dishwasher not walking. The view we had from our window is the I15 Freeway with 24 hours trucking, good if you are a truck spotter but not if you are after a restful vacaction. Lastly they say the family is important but we have two children under 18 and they put us in a 18 and over area and they were not allowed to use the pool or tennis courts etc although other were available elsewhere on the complex but due to the size of the complex you needed to get into a car and be driven.

Welk's is a typical t.s. experience; for those people who mistakenly come here, thinking it is a regular hotel...it's not. What it does, it does well. My 18 y/o grand daughter and I stayed in the Boulder Springs area. To get to our one b.r. condo, we had to walk up about 30 stairs...which is not fun. We found out after we dragged our luggage up the stairs, that there are porters available. They can also be called to drive you around the property (which is over 600 acres in size) if needed. Be sure to call in advance. There is a tram that runs between the different neighborhoods; but only run about every 20 minutes.

Our condo was clean, and had been recenty renovated with new furniture, nice size flat screen tvs, etc. The porch is very small...barely fiting two chairs and a little table; OK for two guests. We had several small issues on arrival, such as no tissue, broken toaster, ice maker that does not work (no water line running to the fridge). The staff responded immediately. I would not recommend the one bedroom for 4 adult guests; there is only 1 bathroom, and the living area would be very confining. It would be fine for 2 adults and 2 kids. The parking throughout the resort is not convenient; you most often do not park right next to the building. It could be up to a block away. It is not the most handicapped friendly resort.

There are PLENTY of activities on-site. Costs vary, and generally just cover the materials. Each rec center has a variety of game tables, games to borrow, etc. There are also no-cost competitive activiteis. There are enjoyable afternoon/evening activities available, too. There are several pools around the property. The weekend was more crowded than the weekdays. We could always find a couple chaises together. Everyone jumps in with lots of sunscreen on their skin..so, yes, the pool is a little cloudy; not dirty, however.

We ate one dinner at the Grille restaurant, and enjoyed it. There is a little grocery mart, and a pizza hut on site too. There is a snack shack at the Boulder Spring pool. We used timeshare groeries.com and Albertsons to fill our cupboards with most of our food for the week.

The property is about an hour from San Diego; we were not surprised, since we always check out distances prior to reserving our vacation rental. It is a LONG 3-4 hour drive to LA. We knew this too, so spent a couple nights up there, before checking into this resort. We had a rental car for the week; something that is a MUST when traveling California.

Timeshare resorts, no matter which one you stay at, try to rope you into their "tour." For people who do not want to be pressured into a timeshare tour, we have found the following strategies helpful: 1) say...We were given this trip by a family member. Our personal income is less than $30K, and our credit card limit is only $1,000. We do not own our home, and can barely pay our rent...2) We already looked on the timeshare resale website, and would NEVER buy a timeshare directly from your property, no matter WHAT special deals you are offering...3) We are not interested in your free offerings in exchange for spending ANY time with your sales people...we would rather pay full price for our fun; so please stop asking. 4) Read my lips...no really means no; so STOP right now. Thanks!

In summary, this is a nice resort, that I can recommend, and would certainly return to, if I was coming back to this area.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the Boulder Springs area, if you want to be able to walk to the Market area easily. Be...

We are a family of four that stayed here August 10th - 16th...This is NOT a resort by any means. It is like a residential complex. This property is over exaggerated in the description that is given by the ownership/management. The complex seemed to be landscaped well and taken care of. However, the pools were overcrowded, cloudy, dirty, and cold. The Boulder Springs pool is the main pool area. That area is overrun with the entire population as it is the main draw of the location. Make sure that you realize that this is a time share property and not a resort. You as the guest are on your own from the moment you check in. Anything you need you will pay for! Nothing is done here without a price. Even having the towels changed in your room. A mini clean per day is $20 and a full clean is $50 per day. Getting extra towels takes at least three phone calls and even then they are very reluctant to do so. Also there is a strong sales pitch as soon as you walk in the door! They make you sign up for a "tour" and give you "free" gifts to attend. The reason that you are made to attend is that the man at the desk will tell you that you have to go or he gets in trouble and you will be responsible for the cost of the gifts. He insisted we leave our children with the five grandmas at the children's center and go take the tour. Even though we just came off a 5 hour plane ride and 50 min car ride this did not matter. Our daughter was complaining that she did not want to go and my son has special needs that they are not qualified to deal with. After a trip like that no one wants to argue with the kids nor explain their child's issues. Therefore we were put in a position to sign for these "free" gifts and be responsible for the charges incurred if we did not go. We had to take the time with in 24hrs to go back explain this situation and return the "free" gifts. The location is out of the way and FAR from most tourist destinations. It is not not in the San Diego area it is truthfully is at least one hour from most major attractions. You will spend A LOT time in the car driving back and forth. Most people who stay here are locals that are not looking to sightsee to get a local getaway. The condo was clean when we arrived. The beds were not that comfortable, but the linens were of good quality and soft. The condo was also quiet so at least we could sleep well after a the long days of travel to the major attractions.

My girfriend and I came up for the weekend. We had several friends and family join us, we spent most of the weekend in the lower pool with the water slide. It was a nice size pool but just small enough that we could keep and eye on our 2 grandsons. There was a small cabana selling adult beverages that helped keep us cool and refreshed. The water slide at this pool was much better than the one at the Mtn. Villas. We used the supplied BBQ's and they did thier job just fine. The pool was a bit warm for our taste but it was still refreshing. We had the one bedroom room, it was plenty big enough. ( how much time do you spend in a room on vacation) for us and 2 of our friends. They said the sofa bed was very confortable and our king size bed was very nice. The bathroom was very roomie. We ate dinner in the one resturant and the service and food was very good. At the resort, even though there was no one waiting on us..... we still had a great time and will return soon.
