My husband and i just returned from our stay at the welk April 15 -22, 2011. After reading some reviews before we arrived, we were somewhat skeptical. However, do not hesitate about staying here. We have been time share owners for 12 years and this was one of my favorites. The grounds were immaculate; you couldn't walk more than a few yards without seeing the staff hard at work. Here are the points worth mentioning:
Check in/concierge: We arrived at midnight so no line but check in was short and sweet -- no dragging it out. We had to visit the concierge to get our permanent parking pass (pretty clever of them) and she did want us to do the sales presentation but there was no deposit and she gave us the dinner vouchers right there. We didn't end up going and they were very nice about accepting the cancellation.
Grounds: Immaculate, sprawling. I don't think I even saw the whole resort. I saw 5 pools..all beautiful. "Rock" waterslides, kids areas, lap pool, adult pool, etc....something for everyone. Two fitness rooms..one with cardio machines, one with free weights. Both clean and inviting. Full spa on site...I never even saw it.
Farmers Market: If you check in on on the weekend or Monday, wait until the farmers' market Monday at 3 to sunset to get your fresh fruit and vegs. Lots of great fresh food to stock your kitchen. Lots of other homemade goodies as well. About 50 vendors right on site.
Store/Restaurant: we didn't go to the restaurant but it looked and smelled great...casual and seemed to be reasonable. the market had many things you might want to pick up but of course very pricey.
Rooms: We had a one bedroom. I was pleasantly surprised to have a washer/dryer. I'm sure the studio didn't but there were washers/dryers near the pools to use. The balconies for the one and two bedrooms were huge...newer patio furniture and extremely clean. The kitchen had some things I have had to purchase in other resorts...paper towels, dishwasher detergent (3 packages), salt and pepper, grilling utensils and one package of laundry soap. The kitchen was huge...you could have unpacked your clothes into all the cabinet space. Walk in shower was glorious.
Golf course: Beautiful little course for a leisurely 3.5 hour round. Many rooms view the course (ours did) -- great atmosphere and the proshop was a short walk from the room.
Parking: somewhat of a con...most rooms had parking lots across the street from the actual room. No problem about pulling up to the curb to load/unload though. About half of the buildings had parking at the door.
Internet: Although free wifi, the connection in our room was very low and slow but that could have changed from room to room. Hey it was there and free.
Grills: were everywhere...three within fifty yards of our villa. And they were clean and lit immediately. I have always had problems with grills at other resorts. Then I saw the staff actually cleaning them daily. I think that was one guy's entire job. Everyone was using them...very convenient...plan to cook out for sure!
Only two things that were a little outdated: bathroom counter, sink and faucets...not dirty or anything but needed updating. Also the carpet in the living room and bedroom was 70's ish. But not dirty...just needed updating. The tile in the kitchen, entryway and dining area was very nice; interesting wood floor in bathroom
The only thing I would say is plan to hang out at the resort. We planned to go to the city everyday. Although it was California highway traffic, it was a 4 - 6 lane highway the whole way and really was never that bad. The concierge told us not to leave the resort until after 10 am (which was definitely less congested) but we left between 6:30 and 9:00 three different days and although a little slow for a few miles, it was never standstill and never took us more than 50 minutes to get to downtown.
Also closest supermarket was about 8 miles away so get what you need on your way back from the city.
Overall I would highly recommend this resort; you won't be disappointed. There were tons of things for kids to do too.
