“Wish I planned more time at the resort...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2011

My husband and i just returned from our stay at the welk April 15 -22, 2011. After reading some reviews before we arrived, we were somewhat skeptical. However, do not hesitate about staying here. We have been time share owners for 12 years and this was one of my favorites. The grounds were immaculate; you couldn't walk more than a few yards without seeing the staff hard at work. Here are the points worth mentioning:
Check in/concierge: We arrived at midnight so no line but check in was short and sweet -- no dragging it out. We had to visit the concierge to get our permanent parking pass (pretty clever of them) and she did want us to do the sales presentation but there was no deposit and she gave us the dinner vouchers right there. We didn't end up going and they were very nice about accepting the cancellation.
Grounds: Immaculate, sprawling. I don't think I even saw the whole resort. I saw 5 pools..all beautiful. "Rock" waterslides, kids areas, lap pool, adult pool, etc....something for everyone. Two fitness rooms..one with cardio machines, one with free weights. Both clean and inviting. Full spa on site...I never even saw it.
Farmers Market: If you check in on on the weekend or Monday, wait until the farmers' market Monday at 3 to sunset to get your fresh fruit and vegs. Lots of great fresh food to stock your kitchen. Lots of other homemade goodies as well. About 50 vendors right on site.
Store/Restaurant: we didn't go to the restaurant but it looked and smelled great...casual and seemed to be reasonable. the market had many things you might want to pick up but of course very pricey.
Rooms: We had a one bedroom. I was pleasantly surprised to have a washer/dryer. I'm sure the studio didn't but there were washers/dryers near the pools to use. The balconies for the one and two bedrooms were huge...newer patio furniture and extremely clean. The kitchen had some things I have had to purchase in other resorts...paper towels, dishwasher detergent (3 packages), salt and pepper, grilling utensils and one package of laundry soap. The kitchen was huge...you could have unpacked your clothes into all the cabinet space. Walk in shower was glorious.
Golf course: Beautiful little course for a leisurely 3.5 hour round. Many rooms view the course (ours did) -- great atmosphere and the proshop was a short walk from the room.
Parking: somewhat of a con...most rooms had parking lots across the street from the actual room. No problem about pulling up to the curb to load/unload though. About half of the buildings had parking at the door.
Internet: Although free wifi, the connection in our room was very low and slow but that could have changed from room to room. Hey it was there and free.
Grills: were everywhere...three within fifty yards of our villa. And they were clean and lit immediately. I have always had problems with grills at other resorts. Then I saw the staff actually cleaning them daily. I think that was one guy's entire job. Everyone was using them...very convenient...plan to cook out for sure!
Only two things that were a little outdated: bathroom counter, sink and faucets...not dirty or anything but needed updating. Also the carpet in the living room and bedroom was 70's ish. But not dirty...just needed updating. The tile in the kitchen, entryway and dining area was very nice; interesting wood floor in bathroom

The only thing I would say is plan to hang out at the resort. We planned to go to the city everyday. Although it was California highway traffic, it was a 4 - 6 lane highway the whole way and really was never that bad. The concierge told us not to leave the resort until after 10 am (which was definitely less congested) but we left between 6:30 and 9:00 three different days and although a little slow for a few miles, it was never standstill and never took us more than 50 minutes to get to downtown.

Also closest supermarket was about 8 miles away so get what you need on your way back from the city.

Overall I would highly recommend this resort; you won't be disappointed. There were tons of things for kids to do too.

This is a great place to stay! Very clean, tons of activities for children (too many to list) and all free of cost, many pools, golf courses, on site store for last minute pick ups. I really have nothing negative to say about this resort, except they don't except pets which is very understandable. I would recommend this place to families... So much to keep children active and many things nearby like Lego land, zoo, seaworld and Disneyland!

The resort was nice, rooms were clean and spacious. Here's the good:

The grounds were amazing, well manicured and just perfect. I don't golf much, but I appreciated the course care. The staff was nice and welcoming... of course this comes with a but, they want to sell you a timeshare...rooms were clean and we always felt at home. Security was good as well... Store is walking distance with basic needs, but pizza hut only has mediums for $12. Pools were nice, and rec room was cool... on our first day 1 pool was closed, and ducks had to be chased from it, and our last day the waterslide was closed when we got there, until then, our 6 year old loved it.

Here's the bad: They need to update the villas. They are right out of the early 80's. On day 1, we had no cold water... thats right... While trying to figure it out, we ran out of hot water. They had previously turned the cold water off. It was repaired within 2 hours, but each unit must have its own water heater because we ran out of hot water every day there after. The decor is out of date, and that is probably why they are so pushy with the tours for a timeshare sale... they need new owners to pay for the updates.
Walls are thin, so bring a noise machine. If you have small kids, there is a nice patio area, however, snooty golfers will give you looks if they make too much noise. I play golf, but again, I hate it, and think you should be able to hit a ball sitting on a tee if kids are making noise. WIFI was impossible, and if you have sprint, you won't have reception. The TV has basic cable, which cut out a lot.

We booked this resort through II and it far met our expectations after reading the reviews. Room was a little small but pool areas were perfect. Our 8, 6, and 3 year old loved the Mountain Springs pool! Tons of activities for them throughout the day (i.e. water balloon toss, volleyball, nerf races, water slide etc. at no extra charge) and all of them made friends with the many kids they met throughout our stay. When we were here we went to Legoland, San Diego Zoo, and Seaworld.(Go to ebay for the best coupons!) The drive was about 40 mins (a littel more with rush hour). We would stay at park until close (pack a lunch to save money!) and then eat a nice dinner near the park (i.e. Dinis Sunset on Beach in Carlsbad - beautiful view of beach - full kids menu), Fish Market (view of harbor and USS Midaway and full kids menu), Crab Catcher in La Jolla (kids menu but a little less casual). Spent 3 days driving into San Diego for attractions and beach and 2 full days at resort. Kids would have loved more time at the Welks pool. Staff very friendly. All in all a perfect family destination. Beautiful sunset view!

My experience at the Welk "San Diego" was awful. They are not even in San Diego. They are in Escondido and it takes about 45 minutes to get to all of the attractions they claim. It is in the desert in the middle of nowhere, and on top of the location, all of the staff and salespeople are rude!!

We were enticed to stay at the resort after going to a 3 hour presentation and buying an audition membership, which includes one year's use of the facilities and a two night stay. It was also supposed to include free plane tickets and multiple other vacations, however these were all lies. We were not able to cash in on any of the membership benefits, even though we paid a hefty price to buy the membership in the first place. The plane tickets ended up being for certain destinations where you had to purchase 7-9 nights at a luxury resort ($400/night) before they would pay your airfare, which was NOT disclosed before we bought the membership. We asked multiple times if there were any restrictions or strings attached and they repeatedly told us that there were none.

On top of how rude the staff and salespeople were after they figured out we weren't going to buy a vacation home, they also shorted us an entire night's stay. They claimed the owners were coming to town and we had to vacate, even though we had previously reserved the room well in advance!

Do yourself a huge favor and STAY AWAY FROM WELK PROPERTIES!!!!
