The Sand Crab Tavern is the place for a relaxed casual pig out on sea food. If you order one of their special combos they bring the food in a large metal bowl and dump it on the table where one chows down w/ lots of paper towels nearby. Service was attentive and large selection of beers to choose from. No liquor license. Clam chowder was great and on certain nights they have oysters that are shucked after ordering. They offer music on select nights. Be ware that the locations of the restaurant can be hard to locate. It is worth a visit if you like seafood. They have a small bar in the front entrance. We will go back.

Terrible location for a good seafood place. Went here for fathers day brunch. Prefix menu was good but not for $25 per person. I loved the Maw maws cajun scramble and the cajun bloody Mary. My daughter got her toast after she finished her eggs and my wife never got her bacon. I would return but will make sure to keep better track of what we are suppose to get with our order.

If you in Escondido, you must eat at this place! It's not the prettiest place but the food makes up for it. We ordered the crab bucket, and the dump the bucket filled with crab legs, shrimp (with the face and legs still on...ugh), potatoes, and corn all over you table. It's an experience to say the least lol. This is also the first place where they give you a mallet instead of crackers to break the crab legs open. We really enjoyed

First things first; getting there. You definitely need a map or your navigation to find this restaurant in the industrial area of Escondido.
The ambience is nautical, and they have a lot of nautical things hanging from the ceiling and on the walls. No dust build-up noted on said items, that was a plus!
Enjoyed the wooden tables, but the dark brown glossy paint was old, and didn't do the decor justice. The free-standing chairs did not fit the decor. A Nautical blue and cream or light tan would have brightened the place up, and lent a better backdrop for the decor.
The food was edible, even good, but we ordered off the unusual side of the menu, and didn't go for the buckets they dump on your table. My lobster sandwich was served cold, not the best taste for lobster. My husbands shrimp gumbo had 5-6 shrimps of average size, and the rest was typical New Orleans flavored rice and beans.
We had a new waitress, so the service was so-so, but she was friendly and self-deprecating!
We will go again, with friends, for the live music, and a bucket to dump on the table.

This place was recommended by a friend, It was Sand Crabs tavern 26th anniversary so the place was hopping. But the service was great and the live music even better. We ordered the 2 crab combo with the peel and eat shrimp, sausage and potatoes. It was all dumped on the table. It was great and the crab and shrimp were very fresh, I will become a regular.
