We like the food so well at Cenote Grill that we drive 45 minutes to eat there. However, on more than one occasion, they weren't open during their posted hours of operation. We recently planned our Sunday around their Sunday brunch only to find out that they were closed for Labor Day weekend. We were so disappointed. We know that they are closed on Mondays, so we checked their web site before leaving (which is never updated). We even called before leaving, but the phone just rang. We arrived a few minutes after 11:00 am, when they are supposed to open, to find a note on the door. It is a shame, because the food is very good, especially the poblano soup, and the service is usually excellent. We just can't count on them being open when we get there any more and it is too far to drive just to turn around and go home hungry.

Thank Mary M

We returned after a year's absence to eat here once again, and it was even better than we remembered. So good, we came back a week later. Not your every day same old Mexican food, nothing you'd find at a fast food or drive-in. To start, the table gets chips and both red and green salsa-and they're happy to replenish supplies throughout the meal. There are several daily specials on a blackboard above the counter and kitchen-check in here when you arrive. One of us usually orders a shrimp entree-either camarones modelo (beer in the sauce) or agave lime shrimp. In both cases the flavors are fresh and distinct, the portions are large, they're quite delicious. I had the pork chile con queso, carnitas in a delectable sauce which featured caramelized peppers and melted cheese, rich but not too heavy, not the least bit greasy. Entrees ordinarily come with a choice of white or brown Spanish rice, and either pinto or black beans, all very tasty. We shared a chopped salad to start. It was a large portion of chopped broccoli, romaine, corn, black beans, red cabbage, olives, red onion, cilantro, in a chipotle vinaigrette. We see lots of people ordering that salad as an entree, same with the cenote spring roll appetizer, which our friend finds particularly delicious. We're also really fond of the sopes plate. Friends shared a plate of fajitas and half was a good sized portion-we see many people taking home leftovers, though somehow we can't bring ourselves to leave anything over. The place gets busy, especially around early dinner time, and you may have to wait-they take reservations for parties of six and more only. If we lived nearby we'd be here every week!

In a vote by diners in San Diego County, Cenote won best Mexican food. Who needs to hear more? Not your everyday TexMex, but unique dishes with less fat and more flavor ( not just chili, but actual flavor) . Quality ingredients and exceptional talent in the kitchen add up to a fun eating experience. My favorites are the Shrimp Modelo and the fish tacos, though lately the taquitos are working their way up my list. My husband can't resist the Cenote Burrito, wet with extra cheese. Small dining area so be prepared to wait a bit on weekends, but well worth the wait. They are also open for lunch.

Very good Mexican food in a little, clean strip mall. Wish they had a full bar. The wine margaritas are yucky. Sangria is good though.
