My family and I went here on a weekday afternoon so we can have a leisurely walk, and enjoy watching the animals and the scenery. The $46 admission fee includes a ride in the Africa Tram. The Africa Tram was about a 30 minute ride that slowly takes you around the African Safari area. It was great seeing the animals roaming around a wide, open space. We packed some sandwiches and drinks, and ate them while we were waiting for the tram to go. If you want to save money by not buying expensive food in the park, families can have a small picnic while sitting on one of the benches with the phenomenal overlooking view of the safari area. We watched the Cheetah Run, which was such an interesting and unique show- they are basically showing how their resident cheetah (Amara) can run about 65 miles per hour on a 100 meter track. The animal caretakers around the zoo were very friendly, informative, and helpful. This wonderful zoo has been doing a lot of conservation projects to save various animal species. I highly recommend this activity for families visiting San Diego.

This is a fantastic place. The admission seemed steep (they do have a Senior discount; just ask) but once I saw the park, I felt it was a great deal. The tram ride is spectacular. The vast area the animals have to roam in their natural habitat is unbelievable. Surpasses any zoo I have ever been to. Worth every penny.
One fact; if you have difficulty ambulating, go to the ranger center in back of the carousel. Go inside the building and ask for a ride to the tram. They have free rides circulating the park at various points. This was actually an extra 'mini tour' as the driver pointed out many things to us.
Every time we stopped to look at our map, someone was coming up to us and asking if we needed any help. The Service here is fantastic.
Food is very pricey, but I'm hopeful profits go to benefit the park.

We visited this park five to seven years ago and were disappointed with a recent second visit. use to be more reasonably priced and trams went out onto the plains and go up close. Now have to pay full admission and then extra hefty fee to get a comparable experience.

For $46 you get admission into the park and a ride on the Africa Tram. The Africa Tram takes you along the African outpost where you will get a far view of whatever animals that are not in hiding at the time. The animals are in their "natural environment" and allowed to roam freely. This means that you may not get to see some of the animals. You don't get an up close of view of the animals so if that is important to you, you should invest in one of the cart safaris. While I was there, one of the cart safaris got to pet the giraffes. Awesome!! Went on the balloon safari which costed about $20 per person. It would've been so much cooler if the balloon took you riding over the park, but it's tied down so you stay in one place. The view was nice, but not much different than the one you see from the viewing points. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking and you will be in the sun at least 95% of the time.

This park was the highlight of our weeklong family trip to San Diego. It felt "out there" - quite authentic, a ridiculous amount of animals, and some hands-on experience. If you have one day, go here instead of the Zoo (assuming you can make the hour-plus trip out there).
