Owner description: Explore four miles of garden trails, enjoy restful vistas, flowering trees, majestic palms, and the nation’s largest bamboo collection. Thanks to our mild climate, plants from all over the world thrive here. Our diverse topography provides a variety of microclimates giving the visitor a sensation of going from a desert environment to a tropical rainforest, all within 37 acres.Located 30 minutes north of San Diego in Encinitas, California, San Diego Botanic Garden features numerous exhibits, including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, succulent gardens, an herb garden, firesafe landscaping, a subtropical fruit garden, and native coastal sage natural areas. In June of 2009, we opened the Hamilton Children's Garden, the largest interactive children's garden on the West Coast.

“Not worth the investment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

Sorely disappointed. Despite being the end of summer, something could have been done to liven up what little life was left in this place. More like a barren wasteland than a botanic wonder. The bamboo section was still attractive and the small pond within it. Massively oversold and misrepresented in marketing and advertising. If I had only paid half price due to the time of year I would have felt less disappointed but only marginally.

“Beautiful spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

I've lived in Encinitas for 35 years and this is one of my favorite places. It's lush, tropical, well laid out and worth the drive if you're staying downtown. While you're there, be sure to visit downtown Encinitas. A charming, friendly downtown within walking distance to Moonlight Beach.

“In Encinitas, north of SD worth the drive”

It is a nice stroll, great place for kids too with kids play area with tree house. Kids area separate from main and quite a walk. There are different sections with local and coastal plants. The maps are helpful.

“A visual delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2013

It is amazing the amount of foliage that is packed into this fantastic garden. Designated areas include bamboo, orchards, Mexican plants, succulents, waterfalls, look out over the ocean, children's garden, and more. Events are ongoing at the gardens. Docents are available to answer questions. There is a garden shop where you can purchase unusual plants for your garden and other gardening related items.

“Great place to spend a few hours”

We lucked into a free admission day where we only paid $2 for parking. Beautifully laid out and wonderful signage. I know virtually nothing about plants so the plaques were wonderfully helpful.
