A family place with old-fashioned real Mexican food, served by nice folks in an interesting and colorful place. You will spend some time looking at walls and fixtures, while you meal is being prepared.

Went to La Especial Norte with 4 friends and we were initially told to wait in the bar. There really is no bar and squeezing 5 people into a small space left us and the servers trying to get around us quite unhappy. They tried to squeeze us into a 4 person booth but we asked for a bigger table. We were finally given a 6 person booth. The food - standard fare, was just okay. The spices were mild in the chicken soup, and the pollo asado plate was okay. We felt very rushed and the service was mediocre. Way better mexican food places in Encinitas and Leucadia. Give this one a skip.

We has vegetarian burritos, seven fish soup, fajita with chicken, cactus, guacamole, and salad. We all liked the food and the portions were very large. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It fills up fast and there can be a waiting line depending on the time you go.

Absolutely love La Especial Norte... They have great food, decent prices. The restaurant is a little loud, but that is what makes it a fun environment for the familiy. Lots of stuff to look at on the walls that give you the feeling you are in a little cantina south of the border. It's a perfect place to go with the family and friends for a casual dining experience. They are known for their soups 8 or 10 different types and are the best I've had! My recommendation is a bowl of chicken soup with a carne asada sope, my personal favorite.

Found this great gem taking the "slow" road to San Diego, very authentic and very reasonable .. loved it so much we stopped by on the way back. My wife had tried the soups , I had burritos ..The Tomatillo sauce was outstanding , the carnitas juicy and full of flavor ! And the prices were very reasonable ... Service was warm and friendly . . seemed like you were eating with "family" (not the dysfunctional one at home ;) )

Will efiniently stop here again - even detour off the freeway to stop in!
