“Classic So Cal beach”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Moonlight Beach has everything you would want in a classic southern CA beach setting. Set just below town - Encinitas - at the base of bluffs, a beautiful long, open, stretch of sandy beach, with bathrooms, outside showers, snack stand in summer, kids play area, beach volleyball, lifeguard tower, parking above. Gentle waves roll in on a sandy bottom. Very kid/family friendly. Can be crowded on summer weekends, but still a very nice experience.

“Very nice beach but not the best in the world. ”
Reviewed May 25, 2014 via mobile

But neither are most California beaches. Moonlight has newly built amenities of all kinds, including a children's play area, plus the well loved beach volley ball court. A favorite local haunt and quite nice.

“A Nice Beach, But Not the Best”
Reviewed May 3, 2014

We researched beaches all along the San Diego County coast and picked this beach because of the playground for the kids (which we didn't use). The La Jolla beach was great, and the beach at Oceanside was VERY nice, but Moonlight beach was just OK.

The closest parking was up a hill about a block away. The beach had a big sand dune to climb down to get to the ocean. Overall, a beach is still a beach, and you're still going to see the ocean (if that's what you're looking for), but there are nicer beaches than this one.

“Beautiful”
Reviewed March 29, 2014

Great stop after brunch in Encinitas at Le Papagayo. Visited a few beaches while in San Diego. This one was definitely my favorite. Preferred over LaJolla shores for sure, but glad I visited both. Different areas. Different vibes. Def recommended.

“Pleasant and clean State Beach with facilities for beach sports”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

Lifeguard tower so safe for kids when manned. some surf fishing it the evening or morning for corvina and NIce diving areas in the kelp. Small but fun waves some days. Usually good parking except for the weekends in summer then forget it. Nearby town has all you need and their are nice little dining spots. Usually safe and some good V-ball games on the sand. rental and surf shops nearby with Hansen's one of my favs but lots of other small and great ones. Just off the freeway (I-5) and easy to locate. Drive the back alleys and streets and see old houses like the Boat Houses on Third St.
