“Fabulous!!! Unbelievable Value”

Absolutely loved this motel. Don't even THINK of staying in a characterless chain - this place is two blocks from the beach, has huge rooms with a bedroom, kitchnette, ocean-facing balcony, and bedroom, and is spotlessly clean. Walking distance to nice main street with good restaurants. Best lodging value I've experienced in YEARS. I will be back. I will go out of my way to come back.

Most of the hotels in Encinitas seem to be located by the I-5, the train, or both. We wanted somewhere to stay that was fairly quiet, with a view, and within walking distance of the beach and town. The Moonlight Beach Motel fit the bill.
We had a room on the third floor that was perfect for us. There was a balcony with a view of Moonlight Beach (only a couple blocks away), with a kitchenette, and the room was comfortable, clean, and relaxing. It was exactly what we were hoping to find for a weekend getaway on the beach.
It was great to be able to stay here, walk to the beach, then come back, change, and head into town. No parking or traffic to deal with, and everything in Encinitas easily accessible by foot. Great sea breezes, little street noise compared to being on Highway 101 or by the train or I-5 freeway, and nice owners.
This isn't a fancy resort, but you get a lot of value for the money and the basics are all covered nicely. Criticisms would be that parking is limited (we wound up one night in a space the size of a sardine can, up against the dumpster), the bed could be a little more comfortable, and the breakfast offered doesn't inspire (but is nice to have available).
We recommend reserving your room far enough in advance to ask for one with an ocean view, and heading into town for a nice breakfast outdoors at Honey's if you want more than a muffin (check out the Swami breakfasts with acai berry sorbet).

My husband and I and 2 teenage girls found the Moonlight Motel via the San Diego Top Ten guidebook that listed it as one of the top ten budget motels. We wanted to stay in an in-town location in Encinitas so my husband and I could walk in the morning while the teens slept in. Besides that, we were visiting friends in the area for a day and only needed a place to stay for one night. We did a drive-by, and this location was perfect: 2 blocks from the beach, 2 blocks from main street. It was off-season, so when I called for the rate, I was told I could have a 1 bedroom apartment consisting of two rooms (beds for the girls in another room) plus a kitchen for $95. Very basic, but a great deal: One double bed in front room with TV, kitchen (tiny stove, regular refrigerator, microwave) and small table for 2 in same room. 2 double beds in separate bedroom, no tv there. Though there is no pool, the patio was right outside our room, in front, with bbq grills. Common patio has small view of ocean and beach two blocks away and has ok plastic chairs to hang out in. Shower goes hot and cold. Rooms may be different in different spots in the motel. Complimentary breakfast is packaged muffins and danishes that I don't think most people would eat for more than one morning! But as it's in the middle of everything and offers a kitchen plus two bedrooms, I agree that it's an excellent budget motel for people who plan to be out and about most of the time. Staff seemed friendly enough to us (other reviews had complaints) but we had no special circumstances.

I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend while we were on vacation. It has a nice location but the location isn't worth the terrible service and rude management. The front office is not open 24/7 so if you get locked out after hours you will NOT be able to get back in until the police are notified. The police were at the hotel 2 times in one night, so obviously there are safety concerns. And if you smoke cigarettes you must leave the hotel (including the parking lot) to smoke. The rooms were trashy. The entire hotel is trashy. The management there are the absolute rudest people I have ever met. Seriously, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME HERE!!!!

My husband and I found this little motel on the internet and were attracted to the fact that it had an ocean view and was blocks from the beach for a very reasonable price. When we checked in we were impressed by the size of the room and the fact that it had a complete kitchen stove included and dishes for our use. We stayed two nights and the first morning we found a place a block or so away called Diner 101 for breakfast that was excellent. This room was everything the ad said it was the view was gorgeous the room was comfortable and the location was awesome...We will be back.

Title says it all - you can't be closer to Moonlight beach unless you set you tent right on the beach. The motel is quite old but still in good shape. Some appliances in kitchenette should be displayed in museum - the stove had buttons temperature controls (i think it came from 70's or something) but it did its job. The "breakfast included" consisted of muffins and coffee - 7 days a week with no variations.
Our one and only trip purpose was to spend all our time on a beach (and do nothing else) - and for that purpose this motel is quite suitable.
