“Moonlight warning, Not a good night sleep”
Reviewed February 27, 2006

Location to the beach is wonderful. Funky beach motel but kinda cool. Definately not your typical chain lodging. Service was great, owner a very nice lady. Great ocean view from our room on 2nd floor. Queen bed comfort was only ok. After 3 nights we'd had enough.
Big Problems: There's a HUGE construction project going on right now across the street. Lots of NOISY heavy machinery moving earth & setting pilings. Plus a non-stop high pitch beeping from front loaders and dump trucks 7:30 am till 5:00 pm. It was impossible to nap or even hear the TV.
Then from 4pm -10 pm Amtrak's Surfliner commuter train runs every 40 minutes directly behind the hotel with a whistle warning. Yikes.
Luckily we had ear plugs with us or we never would have survived it. If you're noise sensitive, I urge you to stay elsewhere.

Tried to talk to the motel about a reservation next summer. Rather unpolite answer. "Not ready: Call again April 1". Asked about the rate. No answer. Asked about rates last year. Motel-representative (owner?) wouldn´t answer. She was definetly not kind. Therefore: Are you really sure this is the right place? Found another (better) accomodation. In 10 minutes. Got an agreement. So why waste your time on this motel? They are very peculiar. When there are so many others.

My wife and I stayed the first week of October 2005 and loved it.

Like the others said, this is a great value for this close to the beach. It was fairly quiet and clean, if not a bit dated. The view is great and the location is fine also.

When we first got there, we liked everything we saw, but we were a bit hesitant because there was no air conditioning. We found that even with 90 degree temps during the day, the cool breeze from the ocean made it more comfortable than an 80 degree day in Ohio.

If you want a five star motel with a lot of action, this is not what you want. If you want a good value and a privately owned motel with some personality, this is the one.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Above average based on proximity to the beach. Location wins the top bill for this motel. Just 2 blocks to Moonlight beach! A great beach for kids & adults - flat bottom for smooth surfing & gentle waves. Lots of smooth sand for walking. A snack & rental shack, showers, bathrooms, a kids playground & a few fire pits all adorn the beach as well.

Upon arrival - disappointing from the exterior. Clean interior w/ kitchenette & prime view of the beach.

Best bet for price point - could not afford an over the top resort for our vacation. If you like a resort atmsophere - you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a low key, or family oriented self-service place you will smile with delight.

Definately coming back here! Room 306 has a separate bedroom.

I originally had reservation at Ramada Inn, south Carlsbad. It was generic, room smelled that lovely lemon pledge. I should have known better than to stay at a chain. I could have been in Toledo for all I knew. No offense against that fair town. I drove past Moonlight Beach Motel and did not care what the rate was (which was reasonable at $115) We lucked out with 3rd floor room with great view of ocean 1 1/2 blocks away. The room had private balcony with table, chairs and umbrella and made for perfect viewing of the sunset. They had kitchen, all cooking supplies and it was way cleaner than Ramada. The living room area had nice sofa which sure beats watching tv in your hard as nails bed. Bedroom had nice ceiling fan and a nice pillowtop mattress. The place was truly a breath of fresh air.
The town is right there so everything is within walking distance. It is not always quiet as you will hear some of the noise from PCH but it was not too bad. Folks are repeat customers so it must be ok.
People would barbeque at night (they have grills)driving us nuts with the aroma of tasty morsels. I can hardly wait to return.
If you want a chain motel, have at it. This was just an all around enjoyable place. I tried to save a few bucks at first and learned the lesson. If it's your vacation, spend the extra $$. It's usually worth it.

We spent 5 days at the motel and we loved the location. I have sisters in the area and they highly recommended we stay there. The only complaint I have is there is no elevator to the third floor(the veiw was incredible) and my spouse has MS, which was a slow climb for him. I would recommend this motel to anyone who wants to be near the ocean, restaurants, and shopping. Thanks for the great experience.

My parents have been staying at the Moonlight Beach Motel for about 15 years. They took me once and I was hooked. Now, my husband and I take our children there when we can. The winter is a great time. There is a strawberry field nearby on the road to Legoland and the berries are in season starting in late January as far as I know. Moonlight Beach Motel has a kitchen in every room and we have a great time making strawberry shortcake with fresh strawberries while we are there. The beach is a short walk down the hill and the view is wonderful. It is an old hotel and not fancy at all, but the location is perfect and makes up the difference. There is one room that has three queen size beds, two of which are in a separate room. It is perfect for a family with two or more children.
