This is THE BESTEST Motel EVER! My husband and I stay here for little mini STAYCATIONS all the time. We live in North County San Diego, but love love love staying here just to get away. It's quaint, comfortable and cozy. Close to everything! Some of our favorite places are within walking distance. Not to mention, the beach is right down the street. We have all of our visitors stay here when they come to town. We will continue to stay here until we're not able!!!

We enjoyed the family-run ambiance of this well situated and nicely maintained motel! Definitely non-corporate, it's managed by friendly folks who obviously care a great deal about the property and their guests. I think at one time most motels were managed like this one, but sadly they are getting harder and harder to find.

The location is great, just a couple of blocks from Moonlight beach, and block off 101 so you can find stuff to eat or hit the little coffee place right around the corner in the morning. (There's also a fridge and stove in the room should you like to prepare your own!). Good wi-fi and cable, too. No complaints whatsoever about this wonderful little motel in one of Southern California's prettiest little towns. Highly recommended. We'll be back!

Yes, "at one time most motels were managed like this one, "
And we wouldn't be here if it were corporate ... It just wouldn't be us ...

Being the "keepers of the keys" deb and I enjoy our job, and to live in Encinitas is the icing on the cake ... We look forward to your return ...

My first trip to Encinitas was made that much nicer by the lovely couple who greeted me as I arrived. Thank you, Deb & George, for having flowers in the room, a coffee maker & toaster at our disposal and towels galore. All this plus directions, restaurant suggestions and shopping tips.
Our view from the balcony was heavenly and the "no ruckus"
atmosphere quite peaceful.
It was a perfect location for beach, dining and shopping.
Regards from NY

Dear Margo, AKA "Tiny116",
Thank you for your kind words about Deb and I. Yes, we also enjoy the flower gardens the owners have planted around the property. The "no ruckus" atmosphere is a must in the residential area where the motel is located. As the summer of 2014 approaches we always want all guests to know we have and enforce quiet hours from 9 PM to 9 AM each day with no gatherings or unregistered motel guests in the rooms and on the property after 9 PM.
Hopefully this will be your first of many trips to Encinitas and the MBM ...
We look forward to your return ...
cheers ... geo & deb ...

I love to travel to Encinitas CA to visit my brother Jay and stay at the Moonlight Beach Motel. Since I discovered this 'jewel' about 6 years ago, I have traveled from the East to West Coast annually and stayed there for at least one full week and enjoyed 'every moment'.... I love the proximity to Moonlight Beach, the comfortable lodging accommodations and kitchenette, the view, the coffee, logistics are ideal for me with Amtrak, San Diego and Palm Springs within easy access and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the TLC and responsiveness that George and Deb demonstrate to all their guests. I appreciate this so much! I wish the owners would convert this building to either co-ops or condos and I would buy in and live bi-coastally between CA, NYC and Virginia Beach. This would be a PERFECT lifestyle for me ! ............from Fay K......NYC and Virginia Beach....PS....Encinitas also has a terrific 'Y' with pools, updated fitness equipment, steam and sauna...can't beat it !.

Fay K,
Thanks for your very informative description of Encinitas and the MBM!
But be careful what you wish for ... "co-ops or condos"
Motels like the MBM are harder to come by year after year, and so many people enjoy their stays here I hope your wish does not come true ... :^)
But I understand why you would wish for that, the location is ideal to beach,
and down town Encinitas is only a short walk away ...
Deb and I enjoy our job at the Moonlight Beach Motel, so the TLC is easy to do.
We look forward to your return ...
cheers geo & deb ...

We have stayed here a few times. The hotel is wonderful. The rate for this hotel is extremely reasonable. All rooms have a kitchenette, Most rooms have a view of the ocean from your balcony. You are two blocks from the ocean and Moonlight Beach. There are many surfers in the water throughout the day. Very enjoyable hotel and the property owners are top notch. They really care about your stay.

Room Tip: There are many small restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Yes, being so close to down town and the beach are two of our best features! We are not the property owners, but they are "top notch" and we are so lucky to be the "keepers of the keys" at the MBM ...

My wife stayed in this little gem of a motel in the quiet beach town of Encinitas a few years ago, and was delighted with it. So when we planned our family's weeklong vacation to San Diego this winter, we booked a room at the Moonlight Beach Motel's weekly rate and used it as our home base, rather than move around to different (and more expensive) motels. It was a great decision, I'm glad to report! We got personal and courteous service from the motel's staff when I made the phone call to inquire about rates and book the room, and were treated with great courtesy and friendliness by George, Deb, and the cleaning staff during our week's stay.

I almost hesitate to wax too eloquent about the motel and its location, lest it become too popular and we have difficulty booking a room on our next trip, whenever we're lucky enough to return. But our experience was so pleasant and comfortable that I can only commend the MB Motel to other travelers looking for a quiet place to stay near the motel's beautiful namesake beach, which is less than a 10-min walk away (about 2 blocks). Also within easy walking distance are numerous shops and restaurants in the charming town of Encinitas, where we could very happily have spent a week poking around, beachcombing, tidepooling, etc.

As parents with two kids, ages 11 and 6, we found our 1st floor suite perfect for our needs: two queen beds in a back bedroom, a fully equipped kitchenette, and a 3rd queen in the front room. Every morning we enjoyed opening the door, looking out toward the beach over the motel's charming patio, and letting the fresh ocean breeze come into our room. (Coming during late March from the snowy Midwest, this was a little like being in heaven for us!) While the women of the family slept in, I got up early and walked around the corner to a delightful coffee shop (Lofty Coffee), which served excellent java and food and is now my favorite such establishment west of the Mississippi River. On the way to get morning coffee, I'd say hello to the Motel's resident Anna's hummingbird, which has built a nest on the grounds these last few years. Mrs. Hummingbird provided all of us with several occasions of delightful observation as she sat on her nest or buzzed around the property, and we enjoyed chatting with George about her comings and goings.

Our thanks go to George, Deb, and the Motel's staff for their friendly welcome to Encinitas and for making our stay so pleasant and comfortable. The quiet hours of the motel suited us just fine. And the magic of Encinitas already has us dreaming about our next vacation to San Diego's North County area.

Room Tip: Uppers floor rooms have a lovely view of the ocean and beach, but some of the 1st floor rooms are ni...

We originally decided to stay here because of 'bad' reviews by guests who stayed here and were upset about being asked to be quiet after 9 pm! We immediately booked and have returned every year for 5 years.
The spacious room with a simple kitchen arrangement and a view of the ocean makes us feel as if it is our own private cottage near the beach.
The nearby neighborhoods are very charming, making the mile walk to the excellent Pannikin Coffee House a nearly daily routine for us.
While you could easily spend your time here without ever needing to drive, the easy access to the freeway makes day trips to San Diego simple.
While this is not the place for those who need to have a feeling of luxury, it is a well maintained, clean, friendly place which brings you back to an earlier, simpler time.
Don't hesitate to stay here!

Flagsteve,
Thank you for taking the time to review the MBM and your visit to Encinitas. Deb and I have only been the keeper of the keys for 3 of your 5 year visits, but we have continued to policy that we have guiet hours from 9:00 pm to 9:00 am with no gatherings in the rooms during those hours. Thank you for bringing this up before the busy summer season ... Bitter sweet as it is ... It is the worse part of my job here at the MBM but very necessary for all guests to enjoy the "private cottage" feel that the MBM is all about ...
We look forward to your 6th year return ...
