Wanted to get out of the desert for one of the last of the cheaper weekends before the real summer crowds started heading out. We read some of the reviews for this place and laughed at them ... That was, until we settled in and sat outside on our balcony:

We checked in around 10pm, unloaded our stuff, checked out the room and was stoked at the fairly spacious blacony that opened up to the view of the beach. After that we went out to get some beer to bring back and enjoy on our Paid for room- with balcony... Well, not 20 minutes later the lady starts poking her head out from the office, in her robe, and then calls up to the room- telling us that we should go to bed! Who tells their customers that?! Honestly... Mind you it was also just before 11pm now. Totally killed our first night. We only ended up coming back to the room that weekend when we actually intended on sleeping.

And then, just before checkout, we were packing our stuff and heading out to load the car... when we get a call to the room with 10 minutes still left before our time was up- as if they were checking to see if we were even up... Are we supposed to be in bed or aren't we?? I have Never gotten a call like that from Any motel/hotel, big or small, making sure were were going to be out of there by the designated checkout time. We didn't even answer the call. And, got out of there right at 11am, on time.

If you like a nosey inkeep, this is your place. Great location and price, okay set up, but waaaaaaay too pushy.

I found this place "by accident" about 5 years ago when my son and I were out for a "bonding vacation" in California. We were tired and "had" to stay in La Jolla the night before and paid $$$$ for an average Best Western room.
"Way" overpriced so the next day we took of "up the road" and found this quaint older motel a hop and a skip from the beach. We booked the rest of our stay there and have been going back time after time whenever we can get away. The "very nice" lady even loaned my son a boogie board on our first stay there. We have since bought our own. It is an older place, but maintained nicely and anything not in the room has been supplied for us.
We LOVE Angelos Burgers and eat there even though there is a complete kitchen in the room. We do use the refrigerator for beverages and such.
It is our "home" as we explore beaches and towns while we stay in the area and as long as it is there, I will stay.
I love this place.

  • Liked — I love the close location and views of the beach.
  • Disliked — Maybe more variety for breakfast would be a nice touch.

My wife & I stayed there during a recent visit to Encinitas & stayed for 5 nights. We were a little apprehensive before we checked in because our friends who are locals had told us it was quite an old motel but also admitted they had never gone in or seen a room.
My wife & I were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived, the lady at the reception was friendly and helpful - she happily changed our room for one with a better sea view, the room was spacious and clean and the view was delightful. I would recommend asking for a top (3rd) floor room and if possible at the southern end of the block, ideally rooms 306 or 307.
We had a lovely time while we stayed there and would certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to enjoy a slightly retro but clean motel in a terrific location and at very attractive rates. Just don't expect to get a 5 star hotel experience.

Let me start by saying that it was my ladies birthday so I booked this motel because I thought it was a way for us to have a good time and hang out and celebrate together. I was wrong. The motel's manager who apparently lives there on site was rude. My lady and I were on the balcony enjoying our time together. We weren't being loud at all, just merely talking to each other. It was only 11pm and here comes the manager in her bathrobe to tell us it is time to go to bed. I really couldn't believe it. We were paying guests and she treated us like we weren't anything at all; like children. The mattress was not that comfortable and I didn't sleep that well on top of everything else. I do not recommend this motel to anyone. Thanks for reading.

We booked our reservations telephonically and were skeptical at first as to the quality of the place if there was not a website to allow on-line bookings. We were pleasantly surprised. The motel is located just blocks from the beach, which can be seen quite magnificently from room 207. The room was clean with comfortable beds, serviced daily, and reasonably priced. We brought our own small coffee pot, which we left for your use by the way, since one of the guests had commented that there were none in the kitchen (Ask for it at the office). This is a small price to pay when the kitchenettes are very clean with an ample refrigerator, stove and small microwave available. It is fully furnished so you only have to eat out if you want too. There is also a BBQ area in the courtyard with two gas grills. There are great places to eat within walking distance and there is a grocery store about a mile from the motel on the right, just past Interstate 5. If you like baths rather than showers, you might be disappointed as only a built in shower stall is available. Ample towels are provided, but bring your own toiletries. We would recommend this place to anyone that wants to get away, not pay high resort prices, but be close enough to the beach to see the beautiful pacific coast sunset from your balcony....Truly a romantic sight to behold. I paid $500 (+$66 tax) for the weekly special (7 nights) - not sure for what period that's available but even the regular rate is a great deal for this area. Only two short blocks to the beach. It's an older motel, sort of 60/70's style but the units are very big, clean, well serviced and with an equipped kitchenette. Three stories - best ocean views from the third. The Queen bed was comfy enough. Most missed item was a coffee maker. A kitchenette suite, but no coffee maker? There is a noisy excavation nearby but that shouldn't last much longer & the construction phase shouldn't be nearly as loud. And I didn't even notice the train at night that a prior review mentioned.

Moonlight Beach Motel, located two blocks from Moonlight Beach in scenic Encinitas, California, is one of the few true "beach motels" left in Southern California … Referred to as the "American Rivera”, Encinitas has the charm of the past but all the amenities today’s travelers are looking for. There are so many wonderful restaurants, Whole Foods Market and boutiques within walking distance of the motel that you may want to leave your car behind … Locals refer more family and friends to this motel than any other hotel or motel in Encinitas. Its quaint 1970’s charm brings guests back year after year. Some things were just not meant to be changed … All of the rooms have kitchenettes. Whether a romantic getaway, a quiet retreat, or family vacation, make reservations early, we book rooms three months in advance, so you get a room that is best suited for your needs. We try and honor all requests for certain rooms and floors when making reservations, but we cannot guarantee ANY room or number. We will do the best to accommodate your requests … This is a “NO PETS” and "NON SMOKING PROPERTY" In all of the Rooms - Front & Back balconies, walk ways and the patio barbeque area … The office and patio barbeque area closes at 9:00 pm … Quiet hours are from 9:00 pm to 9:00 am in consideration of all the guests … We have the “Good Neighbor Hotel Policy” and do not allow gatherings or parties in the Motel after 9:00 pm. If we receive noise complaints you could be asked to leave and responsible for the room charges of neighboring guest.
