Review of Mossbrae Falls

This is my all-time favorite waterfall. It is more like a wall of gushing green ledges into a pristine river. Large flat rocks abound which are perfect for the awe-inspiring view. A place you want to meditate in. You park at the trail head and walk along the railroad track for about one mile (hopefully they still allow you to do this, I know of no other way to get there!). You can not believe what you see when you walk off the gravel and down to the river......totally unexpected, and magical. My favorite.

This is not an easy walk along the railroad tracks unless you are a skilled hiker. Don't take children and beware of the trains. There is NO parking in the Shasta Retreat. You will be ticketed and even (possibly) towed for illegal parking and Union Pacific is patrolling and issuing tickets for being on the tracks.

You will wonder what I must have been smoking while walking down the side of the train tracks to get here. But once you reach the train trestle and take the path off to the right down to the river....

It really is a magical place. Check it out!!!

This hike is not for small children! The hike to the falls consists of walking along the railroad tracks which at times have running trains.
Start off by parking your car on Dunsmuir Ave. or any public parking lot. Do not park your car in Shasta Retreat. Once you have parked go thru Shasta Retreat, cross the metal bridge, make a right at the train tracks and walk along the tracks for about 45 min. When you see a red metal bridge ahead of you, the falls should be on your right. They are hard to see from the tracks so you should hike down for a minute or two. Welcome to Paradise! :)

The only reason I was in Dunsmuir was to go to Mossbrae Falls! Union Pacific has closed access to the railroad tracks, which I didn't know was the only way to get to the falls, as it was becoming too dangerous, with the tracks like a highway, families with baby carriages etc. (that's what I was told) and its going to take about 3 years to build a trail to the falls. Why couldn't Union Pacific run a little train to the falls I wonder? I for one would have been happy to pay for the experience.
