Cape Fear excels at breakfast which is best enjoyed on the sunny patio (shade optional). But the menu for dinner also offers ample choices. The dining room is small'ish, very cozy and tastefully decorated. We stopped recently for a cup of chowder and salmon-crab cakes after watching the sun set on the nearby coast. Both were excellent. You can't go wrong with Cape Fear any time of the year as you pass through tiny, gallery-studded Duncans Mills. Enjoy the atmosphere on a dark winter night as you sit by the windows. The table lamps give it an atmosphere of an old-fashioned dining car on a train. Limited hours during the winter.

We drove into the wonderfully renovated town of Duncans Mills to find a place to have lunch. It was a beautiful and warm day, and the sign on this cafe said open, so even if we were a little worried about the name of the cafe (nightmares from the movie!), we were quickly seated in a charming patio out back and given a very interesting menu. As we were deciding what to try, the other patrons on the patio received their food and it looked and smelled delicious! There was a little bit of a wait for the food (almost no other customers) but we understood that it was being cooked to order. The prices were a little high for a small country cafe, but we were happy with our food.

I had breakfast, ample portions, and my son had a very cheesy grilled cheese. There is seating indoors, and outside on back patio. Food was good, as was service.

Cape Fear Cafe is in Duncan's Mills, about eight miles west from Guerneville by the Russian River in California. The cafe is of modest size but very comfortable, providing a variety of routine and unusual options for a weekend breakfast. We had very good service and the preparation of the food for us and others in the cafe was well done plus ample. Two of us had Hang Town Fries, several oysters on a couple of scrambled eggs with green onions. Those were very good, as was French bread plus potatoes. The third of us had a classic Benedict, with delicious ham, and thought it was superb. The cafe offers wine and beer but not liquor, and we had either Bloody Mary (with saki rather than vodka) and Mimosa (champagne with orange juice). Both were very tasty. We ate slowly, were frequently visited by our server and finally left full and happy.

Had a late breakfast, so the place was almost empty. Service was fine and reasonably quick. They have quite a few variations on Eggs Benedict. I chose the crab benedict. I’d have to call a swing and a miss on this one. The crab cakes just didn’t have much flavor, but did have a bit too much hot seasoning.
