Description: Jake’s Del Mar brings new American cooking to the edge – to the water’s edge that is. Located right on the beach in Del Mar Chef Duvinh Ta uses fresh, seasonal products as the inspiration for updating classic preparations of fresh fish, shellfish and premium meats. The lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch menus showcase clean, eclectic flavors and local, sustainable products that are complemented by Jake’s jaw dropping location on the sand. The nightly Chef’s Special is a seasonal creation that features the best seafood, meats and produce available and through the Legacy of Aloha program, Jake’s donates a portion the proceeds from the Chef’s Special to the San Diego Food Bank.

I had the opportunity to visit here with several coworkers for a dinner meeting and I was blown away. It's Restaurant Week here so I opted for the set menu of Calamari, Steak & shrimp, and Key Lime Cheesecake. The calamari was the most tender I think I've every had and breaded perfectly (not too much). The steak arrived, a perfect medium rare, with shrimp on creamy garlicky potatoes and freshly sauteed edamame. And dessert.... Creamy cheese cake with a tangy, sweet mango sauce that was simply delicious. Great service, great atmosphere, and amazing food!! Try this restaurant if you have the chance.

We think the main attraction of Jake's is the view of the beach and all of the beach activity. We made a 1:45 pm reservation for 4 people for lunch during the peak-demand year-end holidays. They showed us to a booth with a view of the outer room where we could see other diners enjoying their view of the beach. We had seafood chowder, pork Cuban sandwich and salmon with potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The food quality was between good and very good, depending on the dish. We shared a hula pie for dessert. Our server was very busy. He and other servers promised many times to bring hot sauce and bread, but mostly they forgot. The men's room we visited serves two men, maximum, and it borders on intimate when four or five grown men pack in there to wait their turn. Valet parking is $6. Considering the view, service, quality of food and price, our experience was between poor and average. Friends have assured us that Jake's is a better value on clear days when there are not so many diners, and I guess we'll just have to believe them because we probably won't find out.

This restaurant is in a pristine location with phenomenal views of the beach, ocean and sunset. The service was so friendly and helpful. The ahi tuna was inedible and overall food was not exceptional. Prawns were shrimp and tough.

Jakes is the place to go in Del Mar for a fun casual evening. The food is good and service is excellent. We probably frequent the bar eating area once every two weeks because we can usually sneak in without a reservation and the hamburgers are delicious.

I've been there twice. I wouldn't have gone back, but our daughter made the reservation.
The first meal was sea bass which I could smell before the waiter put it down
Three bites and that was it. The waiter noticed after bit and inquired.
Not fresh, tastes terrible. "It just came in this morning"
"From Where, certainly not the ocean"
The second visit was just as bad. "seared scallops" had not one hint that a surface had touched a hot pan, particularly not a searing one. Grey, limp, sort of gooey, and three of the nasty things for 36 bucks. Placed on a curious mix of "fried capers and chopped, sauteed artichoke hearts.
Their signature dessert the 'Hula Pie' is impressive. If you're nine, which our grand daughter is. It is a chocolate sunday in shape of a sharks fin or a sail.
Whatever.
Over priced and in a market with much better food. Great view of the surf if you get a window table.
