“Beauty Surrounds You”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

This property is a treasure. From the creative flowers that adorn the hotel to the gracious and amazing staff (Joey from Guest Services looked like he should have been on TV), this resort beckons you to stay. I went for a girl's weekend and we never left the grounds except to walk the beautiful beach. The food at Raya (server Elizabeth and Mat from the kitchen) was outstanding. Sordfish tacos in wonton paper were the winner (and the oatmeal ice cream). The view is amazing at sunset.
The pool offered some tasty homemade nachos served by Kaitlyn who was new and very cute, Enosteak (server Rosette and Anthony from the kitchen) were fantastic. The lavender and thyme butter was clever and decadant...not to mention the tuna tartar that was incredibly fresh. The steak was the big winner until the desserts appeared....lovely.
Our rooms were very simple with lovely details that played off the grand masterpiece which was the view of the ocean outside the french doors.
I did not want to leave the resort, but alas, back to reality. It is good to know that this kind of magical, friendly service society exists.

This is a beautiful hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the pacific. The grounds are gorgeous and it is a quick stroll down the hill to the beach. There are amazing views from virtually everywhere in the hotel.

The service is impeccable. Small touches like the valets offering to carry small items I had in my hands or being offered bottled water while waiting in line to check in made me feel like they put an emphasis on the guest experience.

I had brunch in the restaurant, with a fantastic windowside table overlooking the ocean. Pricey, but a great experience.

The gym is stunning. Huge picture windows. I could work out there all day.

The rooms are average. Nothing to really complain about, but not any different from any mid-range sort of resort hotel.

Overall, an excellent stay, but the service and facilities really make up a lot for the average rooms.

The location of this resort cannot be beat. The hotel feels more like a convention hotel than a Ritz. The rooms are nice but nothing special and in need of an update. There are multiple pools and the service was spotty at best poolside. The bar area has an incredible view of the ocean and a nice place to watch the sunset if you can find a seat as it stays very busy. It offers good access to the beach and lots of jogging trails adjacent to the property. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice hotel in a great location but not a refined as I come to expect from the Ritz brand.

My husband and I visited here and absolutely LOVED it! =) Please splurge and get an ocean-side room. We slept with the doors open every night we were there. The sound of the ocean and the breeze coming in off the Pacific made for perfect sleeping. There is nothing else quite like it. The views are astounding, and there is easy access to the beach. The staff is amazing! They have multiple places to eat. The staff at the cafe remembered my husband who had been there two years ago. It is a splurge for us to stay here, but we certainly think it is worth it.

Room Tip: Ocean side room is a must!

My husband and I stayed at the Ritz for a business trip. Our room was on the ground floor, facing the swimming pool. The room was simple but very comfortable and spacious, the bathroom was gorgeous. I like the way they hid the refrigerator and some shelving behind a glass enclosure, that in itself was a work of art. My only complaint regarding the room was that there was no coffee pot in it. I really like a coffee pot in the room so I can drink a cup of coffee while sitting up in bed before starting the day, that is one of the perks I enjoy when traveling. I realize they probably don't have pots in the room so you will order room service, however, early in the morning I don't want anyone coming into my room.

The resort as a whole is beautiful. The view overlooking the Pacific Ocean is breathtaking. The fireplaces stratigically placed throughout gives it a cozy feeling and since the weather, otherwise normally warm this time of year, had turned cold was a welcome respite for visiting with friends. The decor is impressive and fresh flowers are everywhere within the lobby area. The landscape is manicured to perfection with quite a variety of trees, flowers and plants surrounding the property. Adirondack chairs and benches are stratigically placed for you to sit in and watch the world go by with a wonderful view of the beach, ocean, etc.

As for the food it was fabulous. We ate in the indoor restaurant twice, the outside one once, called the 180 Restaurant because of the view. The wait staff were very professional and called us by name. As it turned out Kyle was our server both times we ate inside and Matt was our server outside, both were wonderful and took great care of us.

I did not use the gym or spa, however, the gym overlooks the Pacific and beautifully landscaped grounds so I can imagine it was an a joy to look upon for anyone who worked out. As for the spa, a friend of mine had a facial done there. She raved about it and was especailly impressed that while her face was being treated with a mask the technician also gave her a foot massage and hand massage, she was also given a wax treatment on both her hands and feet. She was very happy with the spa service, albeit expensive, but probably no more so than any other 5 diamond resort.

The staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. We were always greeted wtih a "good morning", "how are you", etc. Upon arrival we were given a short tour of the various ammenities that the hotel has to offer and shown directly to our room, I was very impresed with that.

The only real complaint I have is that the resort isn't within walking distance of anything. You need to rent a car, take a cab, etc. to do any sightseeing. A round trip cab ride to Laguna Beach is about $45.00 if you include tips, that is probably the closest sightseeing venture there is.

My husband and I had, overall, a wonderful, four-night stay here as part of a large corporate retreat. The location of this Ritz Carleton is outstanding, with stunning ocean views and overlooking a beautiful, spacious beach. There's an extensive walking/running/bike trail, in addition to a well-equipped fitness center, two tennis courts, a basketball court and a golf course nearby.

The public spaces (e.g., lobbies, fitness center, restaurants) are exquisitely decorated. A "must" is to enjoy drinks and appetizers at 180blu at sunset -- cheerful service, magical vistas, and they bring guests bright blue shawls if you're chilled. We had dinner at Raya one evening. The food was good (the lobster tacos, in fact, were "to die for"), and the service was excellent. We did not use the large pool, which looked clean and inviting. Our "beach stone therapy" treatments at the spa were delightful. As we have come to expect from Ritz Carleton resorts, the staff/service is generally warm and top-notch, and the property, spa and rooms immaculately maintained.

There were some disapointments, namely, our room, which was a standard king with an ocean view, which definately felt pinched in size. The closet was a postage stamp; the bathroom felt tight for two to share, even with the two vanity sinks and a toilet separated from the tub-and-sink area. Our room overlooked the Dana Lawn, which also serves as an event space. Needless to say, the noise level from ongoing events was annoying, and we needed to keep our shades drawn while events were being held -- which compromised our enjoyment of the ocean view and small deck.

Also, the resort is extremely large, with very long, and in some places, narrow hallways, and our room was a "hike" from the lobby and other areas. We quickly learned to use the stairs, rather than make the trek, and wait, for the elevators. And, upon leaving, there were no bellman available to assist with our bags (probably due to the size of our group, many of whom were leaving at the same time), so I trekked, like a sherpa, bogged down with a suitcase, laptop and wardrobe bag, through the long hallways to the lobby -- at one point, although I was greeted with a cheery, "good morning" by a male staff member, he did not lift a finger to assist. Shocking!!

Nevertheless, we would consider staying here again, and bring our children next time.

I am surprised to read the review which gives this resort a one star. I am with the same large group with the NY law firm and cannot say enough about the hotel!
I have found every staff member pleasant and wiling to go out of their way to help! More than once, a staff member has personally walked me to events when I couldn't find my way.
The ritz carlton is spectacular! I can't wait to return!!!!
