While we were visiting in Dana Point from the San Francisco Bay Area, we need our weekly sashimi "fix". We checked trip advisor and decided upon Gen Kai Japanese Restaurant. Staying at the Holiday Inn Express, we thought it would be walkable to this restaurant. It wasn't (unless you had quite a while). It was already 8:30 at night when we started out. We went back and got the car and drove up the road several blocks uphill (we are not young nor fit). The place was very busy on a Thursday night, with a large sushi bar and at least 6 sushi chefs, The decor was standard japanese family restaurant - not fancy.
After quickly being seated at a table, we were asked for our drink requests and given a VERY extensive menu- with items like New York steak. And all were reasonably priced (most under $20).. As we primarily eat just combination sashimi dinner, we ordered that for $17.95. The miso soup (strangely served with a chinese soup spoon) and cucumber salad was brought immediately to us, along with an order of edamame. On our sashimi order we had 15 pieces of 5 types of fish, with nothing out of the ordinary but all a very nice quality and tasty, and of course a rice bowl (served with chinese chop sticks- rounded ends).
For the included dessert, we had green tea ice cream, but there was a choice of 4 ice creams. We drank green tea, which was very hot. Our bill came to about $42- very reasonable for what we had We can only speak to the sashimi, but from the crowd present, I would say the other menu items were good as well. .
