It was a lot of fun watching the surfers (I understand this is a classic surf beach, mentioned in the Beach Boys' Surfing USA.

Fun surfing and beach for kids, though dirty water and seagulls taking overfilled garbage cans and unclean bathrooms.

We stayed here and rented a handful of campsites for a family gathering - elderly grandparents and small children were among us.

The official campground website doesn't tell you much about logistics and we had to go elsewhere to be informed before we came, so this might help others:
1. If you are looking for nature and the great outdoors: this is not it. The campground is just a rustic place to stay near the beach. It is crowded, in a good way - but quiet.
2. Showers and facilities are very clean - people come by every day to clean (hose out) these places out. Trash is removed daily.
3. Bring quarters for the showers - 50 cents will give you a good long 6-minute shower. (Water pressure is awesome.) If you dry your hair, there is one bathroom next to each set of showers with an electrical plug.
4. Campsites are very small - every inch counts. The beachfront sites can handle up to 4 mid-sized tents (4-6 person tents). The inland sites are less forgiving. One site we had (#106) could barely fit one 6-person tent. The other tent was luckily 2-person and fit between two trees. Avoid site #106 - worst site on the property.
5. Site #38 is probably one of the biggest beach sites there - very nice and large.
6. Parking fee: $15/day if you bring more than one car per site. The website says two cars per site - that's not exactly true. There are two parking sites per site, yes. But they charge after one car. (The second site is for a trailer you might tow was the explanation.)
7. Shade is non-existent at the campground - so bring tents, umbrellas, pop-ups...
8. Beach: rocky. Ocean floor - very rocky. Water shoes: useless (they fill with sand).
9. Surf: depending on the time of year, good. Lots of opportunities for surfing and boogie boarding.
10. Small children: watch them. The ocean floors deepens quickly and the waves/current can be very strong. Life guards are around, but you have to do your own patrolling.
11. Exercise: there is a running/biking trail right next to the campground that runs along the Pacific Coast Highway. Lots of people bring bikes for themselves and their kids to ride around the campground of the path.
12. Shopping: Doheny is in the middle of a metropolis so grocery stores etc are within a couple of miles of the campground.
13. Electricity: some sites have them, but most do not. Bring propane grills or charcoal. Ice is not available on site so you have to go into town for that.
14. Bring firewood. Or you can buy in it on-site for $7 a bundle.
15. Laundry: not available on-site. (There are a couple in town.)
16. Pets: people bring them, but they have to be on leash, which makes sense. Same applies to the beach...no pets without a leash.
17. Major stressor: having to reserve sites 6 months in advance through the online reservations system. We were incredibly fortunate to find space.
18. If anyone is coming to visit you - they have to pay the $15/day parking fee and can either park at the Doheny Beach day lot or the overflow parking at the campground.

Overall: fun and relaxing. But know what a place is before you go there and then there are no surprises.

We finally got Mom to the beach, and with the beach wheelchair we borrowed from the life guards (for free), she was able to put her feet on the beach sand and get some ocean water on her hands and feet.
The park is a nice park, we enjoyed driving and checking it out after our beach experience.
We also enjoyed the little gift shop at the back of the main life guard station and found some great souvenirs.
