Love this place almost as good as NYC Pastrami. I have to say the chili dogs rock too. Come hungry and come often this place is a most while in LA

“Great Pastrami”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

Down in Culver City for a Memorial Service for Tak Yamamoto, the organizer of the Manzanar Pilgrimage for many many years. After the service I became nostalgic for the long summer days we spent on Venice Beach ending at Johnnie's with a great Pastrami Sandwich. Same great Pastrami, same firepit, same tabletop jukeboxs and same fun atmosphere. Wish the bread was better but the waitress was GREAT, the service was immediate, and the fries were the best with moist interiors and crunchy crispy exteriors. Took two sandwiches back to Seattle and they tasted almost as good cold at midnight after the flight home while the memories remained.

“Over ate, again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2012

Being on the road for work sucks.

I arrived at LAX at midnight starving. Staying on the westside, there's a few food options, mostly junk. Johnnie's was close to the hotel so I decided that I might as well go for broke.

I had a pastrami and chili fries. I probably should have just stopped at pastrami but chili fries always seem to call my name. I thought that I would just have small portions of each - but when I got to the hotel the pastrami vaporized and I put a good dent in the chili fries.

The pastrami was delicious and there was lots of it. The chili fries were good, in particular because their chili is good - all meat, no beans.

Didn't feel great the next morning - but it was delicious going down.

The atmosphere is kinda diner-esque. Its small inside and there are a few tables outside. The service is good; the waitresses have been there for years - she was able to calculate my order, including tax, in her head.

Cash only - no cards.

Great option if you are in the area. Titos Tacos is also a good late night spot. Recommend both.

“Good pastrami sandwiches”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

Not in the class of Langers or Brents, the pastrami sandwiches are the snack bar variety - that is more fat and not as tender, but still worth a stop when I am in the neighborhood.
