I recently checked out Akasha at a friend's recommendation on a Saturday night. It was pretty full when we arrived at 8:30 and after sampling the food, I can see why. The menu contains a mix of upscale comfort food (mac and cheese with gruyere and bread crumbs) and more sophisticated CA cuisine (lamb gnocchi, sea bass, seared tuna). It's a bit more trendy than romantic, in terms of ambiance.
One of the most impressive aspects of this restaurant is its 40 or so wines, many of which were unusual, available by the glass. Alas, we fell in love with a Cote du Rhone early and just got a bottle, but I will be back to sample more.
To cap off the evening, Akasha has a wide selection of delicious desserts-- I especially recommend the pumpkin cheesecake and the kahlua chip ice cream.
