Wow, what a special place! We arrived late on a Friday night, and were pleased to get a table. The service was attentive, and we were allowed the proper amount of time to peruse the extensive menu and wine list without hovering of our server. When asked, the server was very helpful with wine choices and explanation of menu items. It was hard to choose from the diverse menu. My salad was perfectly dressed, and the calamari was tasty. The main courses were exquisite: sweet potato gnocchi and a duck pasta dish with a fantastic sauce. The dessert choices were great as well., with a nice selection of dessert wines. Although we were seated near the middle of the room, the lighting made us feel like we were in our own quiet corner. There was none of the usual bustle that you experience when seated in the center of the room. It was an evening to remember.

Our first visit for dinner. We were met by the delightful smell of the BBQ cooking the nightly special as we pulled into the parking lot. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who sat us by the window overlooking the wine vines and garden. Our server was friendly but seemed a little disappointed we were not ordering alcohol. The menu was a little confusing at first but once we figured it out we ordered our starter and entrees. The Romaine and Baby Arugula Salad was delightful and my Fetuccine with Duck and Dried Figs was tasty but not spectacular. My wife was very pleased with her Sweet Potato Gnocchi.

Fantastic is the way to describe every visit to Onotria. Great Wine Selection, with a wood fire BBQ out front to lure you in!!! The Service is Excellent and if you sit in the dining room you will have a view of the garden where the delicious Zucchini's are grown!!! Thanks to Chef Massimo and the excellent staff that take care of you like royalty!!

Our first visit to Onotria was with another couple on a Saturday night. The service started out nicely enough and the food was actually quite impressive. They have a wide variety of “foodie” items with modern, upscale presentations. They have a tremendous wine list also. The atmosphere is a casual old world style.

We started with Bresaola and Zucchini Blossoms with goat cheese appetizers. Perhaps we were a little boring with our entrees, but it was our first time. I had the Penne with Wild Boar Ragu, my wife had the filet with Pomegranate and Port Reduction. Our friends had the Veal Cassoulet and Mediterranean White Fish. Everyone shared around and every dish was out of this world! In fact everything was almost perfect, until we were finishing dinner and sort of noticed that our service had virtually shut down. We never had our water re-filled. It took forever to clear plates and then forever longer to come back and ask about coffee and dessert, and so on. We finally had to get up and track down the waiter to get our check. We felt a bit like someone more important had shown up and distracted the wait staff. A visit to the restrooms was equally disappointing. There is a real disconnect between the plain and poorly maintained fixtures in the restrooms and the relaxed, upscale image they are obviously going for elsewhere in the restaurant.

We will definitely go back as the food really was something special. I will report on whether the service was a one-off situation or a more systemic problem.

Under-seasoned food served with pretentiousness combined with an arrogant owner who doesn't honor the deals he advertises. You can do far better in Costa Mesa especially considering how poor the wine list is here. Old Vine Cafe for instance is a far better choice as is Marche Moderne.
